Disaster strikes..

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Well so much for the tropical hibiscus collection at work. The whole greenhouse froze last Thursday night,Cause is still being investigated. My breeding program is no longer up and running. 90% of the hibiscus froze,99% of the orchids are gone.Along with new palms, etc the list is endless. Now I know how hurricane victims feel or the folks out west this past winter. So no more flower pics from Iowa for a long time. Some of my hybrid seedlings did survive so far.

Eclipse, so sorry to hear that! You had such wonderful plants, I know you must be absolutely devastated. Was it just that one night where everything got exposed to the cold? If it was, or even if it was a couple of days, some of your plants may come back so don't give up on them yet. I've been surprised recently by a couple of zone 10 plants that I had planted outside in my garden and got exposed to over a week of nights in the high teens/low 20's when we had our big freeze back in January, and now they're starting to come back from the roots.

I'm gonna hold most to see what survives. :-(

Just let us know when you are ready to receive cuttings. a

Oh Kyle, I am just sick for you. I really am. You were so much fun to follow in the threads for as long as I have been on Dave's and I so respected your talents. You must be in almost physical pain.

Do you think it was some disgruntled rotten employee?

I am so sorry.

I can send you cuttings of all of mine just as soon as they get a little larger.

Ouch, big time ouch!
But like ecrane3 said, I am surprised what has come back so just take a wait and see approach. Of course, it does set anything that did survive way back.

the smaller plants under larger ones are ok...but will take almost a year or more to end up at the same place I was a week ago.

Tomorrow(tuesday) I start sorting out the keepers from the trash. You know many are beyond help by that certain smell after things freeze and warm up.My palms didn't look too bad on Sat. but today they have massive damage on the newer leaves .so they won't get used this summer.

Sorry to hear about your loss Kyle.

Hey Kyle

Man, I have never seen so many people have torched plants like this year. From Cali to Texas to Florida. Let me know if you need some cuttings or rootstock and we'll get you back on track. You were developing some nice ones there.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Kyle, I am devasted for you. What ever I have when some get a little bigger the cuttings are yours. I can not imagine how you feel. I was in awe of every picture and green with envy also.

I think I lost another tropical. Its trunk feels soft. I hope it comes back from the roots, But not betting on it. I bought 5 from Barry's sale last year and looks like 1 survived.

How are your oleanders? mine are starting to bloom and then they will be cut back drastically so they will fill out. I don't have alot of what you have but what ever I do it is yours.

Your friend always,
Sandy

Kyle, I just checked and I can take a dozen long cuttings, most in bud, of Itsy Bitsy and we know she grows at warp speed. Whenever you are ready........

San Bernardino, CA(Zone 8b)

Kyle, I'm SO sorry to hear about this :-( I'm sure you must be just sick. I'm crossing my fingers that you can at least salvage some.

Good luck,

karen

Sandy, the oleanders were pretty much untouched, wish all the others were so reliable. The hibiscus are starting to ooze from the trunks, so I can determine whats gone soon.

Thanks everyone for the offers, I may have to take a few up on them. I will keep you all posted on what dies and what lives.

ardesia, the Itsy bitsy I got from you before are still alive, they died back 80% but still green at the bottoms so will see what they do.It will take some time for me to get all my trees trained again.gonna be a long season.

Glad to hear those little tough guys made it. Now, get off that knee and rest.

Mol, Belgium(Zone 8a)

Kyle, sorry to hear about that. If the frost wasn't hard most hibiscus are still alive, just burnt leaves and tips. A severe prune can help to have new green shoots.
Not much to offer but if you need some let me know.

Regards

I know I am brand new on this forum, but I feel awful. I don't know how to do cuttings, if someone could teach me thru the forum, I have 12 different varieties I could send.
