Hi Neil,

I once had a burro's tail cactus that looked alot like yours. I had mine inside by a glass door and it did great. The tails got to be about 15-20" long and was gorgeous.

mine get morning sun and regular water in summer. they grow really fast the farther south you are and with any luck, yours should bloom, though it's not a striking bloom. the name is Sedum morganianum.

and if any of the little pod fall off put on a paper plant and forget them for awhile and the next thing you know they are growing roots out the bottom... pretty cool..

I found this little guy this past weekend while cleaning winter debris from my beds. He was still in a little 4in liner pot and had overwintered under some fallen leaves. Apparently I forgot to pot him up before the end of the season. I bought him a nice little pot and put him on my patio table. At least I can tell you they are hardy!
