2 pawpaw trees in 1 hole?

Brooklyn, NY

(due to lack of space), I am planning on planting two pawpaw trees in one whole (a-la-davewilson). Has anyone tried this and which 2 varieties do people find to be the most flavorful?

flavor of pawpaw trees tends to be a subjective thing. Personally I like the more orange-ish fruit over the paler varieties. Peterson's Pawpaws reportely sells the best tasting pawpaws (all named-selected varieties chosen from large numbers of seedlings of choice varieties). Other highly rated varieties include Mango, Overleese and Rebecca's Gold. I think the Peterson varieties are called Rappahannok, Shanandoah and Susquehanna.

I have three pawpaws planted in about a 2 foot radius circle planter, growth has been slow. They've been in the ground for 3 to 4 years and I have not yet seen buds or flowers (and this year seems to be no exception). Other plants I have in my yard (including Peterson varieties) have bloomed earlier and grown more quickly. The plants in the (circular, in-ground-planter) also recieve less sunlight which likely contributes to their slower growth (I bought into the "plants must be shaded" rule when planting those and didn't when I planted the other varieties I have put in since).

I have two straight species seedlings that I planted about 1.5ft apart. Like Chills said, mine have been very slow growing and are just now starting to leaf out here near the gulf coast. I also have mine in the shade because I was afraid they would scorch in our heat. The reason I planted two close together like that is because they usually sucker in the wild and end up growing that way anyways, so I figured it wouldn't hurt them.

I also have three planted closely, about 1.5' apart. They are doing fine that way. They are also a little slow to get going but it is because I screwed up and cut down their sun shade in the middle of their first year and they fried. Just make sure to prune out the crossing limbs to let enough light in.

How did these trees work out? Especially the ones in Zone 8b.
