Bogs?

Charlevoix, MI(Zone 4b)

I hope this is the correct forum. Do any of you have bog gardens? Eventually I would like to put in a waterfall/stream/pond but I don't have the time nor the resources this year.

I'm thinking of doing a small bog garden to get the hang of things before I make a huge commitment. Perhaps whiskey barrel size. Any pitfalls I should be aware of?

Thanks so much!

Get some of those mosquito dunks if you don't put fish in there.

I was under the impression that there really is no standing water in a bog garden. Am I wrong?

Isn't a bog like for marginal plants? Mine all grow write in the water.

I do not have a bog area, but from what I understand it is mushy but without standing water. Most marginals grow very well with a few inches of water over them. I do not know much about bog gardens. I would think that the soil would sour in a container. What I have done in the past is to have a large container filled with water and put a few potted water plants in it but I don't think that would be considered a bog.

A "bog" is usually a constantly wet mushy garden but it can have a bit of standing water...mine does sometimes after a heavy rain. However, mine doesnt contain water long enough to grow skeeters. Depends on how you build it.

I made my bog by digging down about 18 inches in a large oval area about 5 feet by 8 feet. Then I put in 2 layers of thick black plastic with a few holes punched here and there and them put the original soil with some compost back in the area.
