I would like to "grow" a vine playhouse for my kids.... I've get the basic idea, using wood or pvc and chicken wire then having morning glories or beans grow up them. But I have no idea how to do it. Anyone done this before? I would love to see pictures so I can visualize. Thank you in advance.
Would like to "grow" a vine playhouse for my kids....
There is a "squash tunnel" at a local farm here. I'll try to get some pictures this weekend. The tunnel is built with series of crossed hoops (like a camping tent) that are stuck in the ground, covered with chicken wire, then squash vines planted around the outside to grow over the wire. I'd stick to a safely edible type of vine for a children's tunnel. Scarlet runner beans or similar would be lovely. The kids can pick and eat the beans hanging in the tunnel
Talk about neato!! Great idea. If anyone else has ideas! Id love to hear!! Thanks
Plant a ring of sunflowers with one gap for door. Plant about 2 rows for a good place to hide!
Cornstalk labyrinths are fun if you have room.
sahlink, here is a photo of the framework for a gourd tunnel that is in process at a local farm's children's garden. The gourds will grow over the frame and create a shady green tunnel that is decorated with gourds on the outside. You can use any vining plant to cover the frame. Squash and beans are less messy than tomatoes. Keep in mind that the kids will brush up against some of the vines as they crawl through (hence no tomatoes - to many stains on the clothes).
I want to do this next year for the littleies in our guerrilla community garden. A great idea. Have you taken any pictures of the tunnel now that it has all grown in?

I'll have to remember to bring my camera next time and hope the gourds are still on the tunnel for a photo op.
That's a beautiful vine tunnel Beth! What time of vine is making the colours at the top? Are those nasturtiums?
There's a few nastertiums and marigolds towards the bottom. There ARE gourds in there but they are covered in the MG and grapevines. One branch of the grapevine has died off and the leaves turned fall colors prematurely.
Beth it's beautiful...I tried doing similar but bought the wrong wiring, had no substance and kept falling..know I should have bought cattle fencing rather than just the cattle mesh...
