Pink Sundrops

Kalamazoo, MI

Hi everyone,

I have a 25' x 5' section on the west side of my house that I want to plant. The sod was removed last summer and layers of newspaper, leaves, and manure put down last fall. It's between our house and the neighbors' and only gets a few hours of direct sun. Would pink sundrops do all right or should I stick with a shade lover? I thought it might be less invasive there because of less sun, but would it just get scraggly-looking?

How many hours are a few? And at what time of day?

Kristi, I hesitated to answer your question since I really don't know about snowdrops, but I will say this. Even though they are supposed to get full sun (as you obviously know), my SIL planted yellow snowdrops inbetween her house and the one next door, southfacing. I think they get more like 6 hours of sun, and they do great. I know that wasn't much help.

Also, I went to a couple websites and read about the snowdrops and it seems they say you can plant them under larger plants, so it seems they do well in some shade. Boy, they are pretty, I would go for it if someone tells you they know more than me. :o)

Maybe try the bulb or perinneal forums.

I'd guess about 4 hours of sun. Last year we planted cosmos and they didn't do well enough because they're so tall. They bloomed but weren't quite as erect as they were in a full-sun spot (moved hollyhocks to that site).

Thanks everyone!
