Burning DVD's

I've been having a heck of a time getting this done.

I have just over 4g images that i want backed up (I do have them on my ext. HD, but it's only 200g and fills up fast with PC backups) So i want the additional back up.

I have that Sonic that comes with the PC, but it keeps telling me to "Please insert an appendable data disc and try again"
so i went to download.com and got a freebie program that didnt work either... that one it would tell me to reformat the disc, and then my PC would lock up.

doing CD's would take too long, plus i'm running out of discs, as i attempted to burn - and ended up with a coaster... didnt want to try anymore as i'm down to about 4 discs left.

the DVD's i have are - memorex DVD+RW and Verbatim DVD+R (spindle type)

maybe my discs are garbage? I've heard that Taiyo Yuden are one of the best -- but i'd have to internet shop for them.

scutler -- i read your comment about burning dvd's in twiggy's thread, so maybe your knowledge will help me.

I know years ago i purchased Roxio ripping and burning software (which wasn't cheap) but alas -- it doesn't do DVD's and i'm tired i buying expensive software only to have it help me only a few years later.

I know that to keep my sanity and a less time consuming way would be just to buy a HUGE ext HD... but right now, i dont want to/can't spend the cash.

So -- any idea what i'm doing wrong?? Better discs??
