San Diego Cutting Sale
It's too far for me, Mickey -- about five or six hours one way. I'm not sure that I would go if I was close though because I am maxed out of room anyway!
I'm sort of maxed out too. I don't know were I'm going to put them this winter.
Mickey
Stackem!
LOL, Mickey! I heard you brought back boxes and boxes of cuttings! You go, girl!
Mickey, did you really buy $1000 worth of cuttings at the sale? Wow! I think I would have chopped up all of mine for you for $1000! Tell us which ones you got. We would love to know.

Clare,
Who said I paid that much ? Blabber mouth...I also picked up a bunch for some friends. They just had so many good cutting and huge ones. I'm still working on the list and getting them started to root.
Mickey
LOL, Mickey. A little birdie told me:-) Plus, I saw the pictures of the back of your car;-)
Sounds like me can't control my self lol So many colors so little time Not hard to get caught up in it. Its the time of year at least here in the south spring fever. But spring has passed were in the mid 80's already so much for spring. Good growing weather though. Mickey good luck on the rooting process Clare I know you wouldn't chop yours up lol Dana
Clare,
Which little birdy? Well I finaly got them all in their little pots to root. Ther were still so many that I wanted and didn't get. We had a great time. Everyone was so nice and helpful. My friend were happy to get their cuttings because they have lost so many here too.
Malestrom, what do you mean stack them? I have my seedlings that I need to move up to 1 gallon pots and I don't have a clue were I'm going to put them. Do you mean put them on top of the larger pots? Than's what I did in the winter here.
Mickey
LOL, Dana. Well, when you're right, you're right;-)
Mickey, I actually read it over at Pals and saw your pics. It sounds like you had a great time;-)
Ah man! I can't believe I missed it! Where was the sale?
Tea, I think it was at Balboa Park. I'm sure there will be another soon.
Oh, that's good. Do they happen often? What's the best way to find out about them?
Tea, you may want to join the Southern California Plumeria Society since you are right there, and then you will be notified way ahead of everyone else! I think they have them a couple of times a year.
Tea,
The Southern California Plumeria Soiety has their sale of cuttings (no plants) in the spring and the plant sale(not cuttings ) is in the fall every year. It's at Balbo Park, noth of the zoo next building over from the church.
The sale is always free and parking is free. It can be a mad house at times.
It's hard to get cuttings or plants in Arizona so my husband and I drive over so I can get my fix. I can't belive I have so many on my list that I still want. I am now waiting for them to root so I can get them pottted up and out of my laundry room. Will warm weather ever get here this year?
Do you have many plumeria. There's always member of the club that have plants or cuttings for sale. I've been lucky and had the opportunity to meet so many great people form the club. I wish I could go to the meetings but it's just too far to drive.
Mickey
Hi Mickey,
I love plumerias, but I only have (I hate to say) --- one -- right now! I bought one in Hawaii on my honeymoon, many moons ago and kept it alive for many years, then lost it while on vacation one year. Since then, they've always been one of my favorites.
Last year, I finally bought a replacement and started researching to find out how not to kill it. (lol) I really like growing things from seed and cuttings so THAT was the sale I wanted to go to. Oh well.
I want a few more, but I also want to make sure I know how to care for them before going hog wild, so I will take my time. If you have any suggestions on varieties or anything else for a newby, I'm all ears.
Tea-
Tea,
For a beginner who wants lessl problems and lots of flowers I think Samona Fluff, Celadine or Slaughter Pink are good choices. I don't know what nurseries are in your area. If you get a rooted plant you'll save some time without having to root it.
I love my celadines. I had a large on inside the house this winter and it flowered it's little head off all winter. Now that the rest of my plumeria are waking up it's again my celadine that's flowering.
Mickey
Mickey, I agree that Celadine can't be beat for looks, fragrance, and blooming habit. It is probably my overall favorite. I love my Samoan Fluff too for the same reasons.
I looked them up and they are both beautiful. Thanks for the suggestions.
The one I have now is Pacific Pearl. I got it last year from Simpson's nursery in Jamul. It has growth on all 3 stalks. The longest is about 2" long. I'm looking forward to seeing it bloom again this year.
What is the trick to keeping them from getting leggy? I've seen so many plumies with long stalks and a few leaves at the end. They look so out of proportion. How do you keep them looking full and dense?
Tea, Pacific Pearl is a good one and a reliable bloomer with a great fragrance. I have two of them, and they both have inflo's. You can prune strategically for fullness, but some cultivars have growing habits which are tall growers. Some cultivars are naturally dense. If you look at Florida Colors Price List, you'll see a description of growth habit next to the cultivar: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/690602/
Ok. Thanks Clare.
.....but TLeaves don't leave here or you will miss important info like what Clare told ya!
:)
.. oh, I would never leave. I need all the important information I can get! :)
Well, I got a Celadine cutting today (along with an Aztec Gold). I found them at the Spring Garden Show in OC. I'm now a 3 plumie family! Now all I have to do is get them to root.
Thanks for your help on the varieties!
Congrats, Tea! Good luck, and I'm sure you will have no problem rooting them:-)
