Directions on caring for new cuttings?

Metro DC, MD(Zone 7a)

Hi, I'm sure that I've seen a newbie thread that splained what to do with cuttings when you get them, but I've been searching and coming up empty. HELP - I just received the most spectacular cuttings today and we need to take care of these babies right away. Could someone please post a link to an informative thread?

Okay, Yes or No - should I put my cuttings in water?

Wrightie, I think if you put it in a glass with about 2 or 3 inches of water until it gets the nodes bumps where the roots will pop out from.depending on temp and humidity it might only take a few days or more. Then pot it up in real good draining potting mix.
Some folks add H2O2 to the water they soak it in.

Thank you, donlaclair, that's what I was hoping to hear! I'll do it tonight before I hit the sack.

Hooray!

crickets ... LOL : )

Wrightie, forgot to add you have to change the water daily to help prevent the cutting from rotting. If you have to use tap water it's best to let it sit for a while to degas before putting plant material in it.maybe take a gallon and leave the cap off over night

Could you sense my excitement?

Wrightie, You can root your cuttings two ways, by sticking them in a glass of water. which would more than likely work best if you use clear glass , changing your water daily or every other day. Or stick the end in rooting hormone and in potting soil and keep moist, which is what I do, I have great success this way, sometimes small green cuttings will rot no matter what you do to root them.

Best of luck to ya......

Thanks everyone. I used the H2O2 & water method. Some of the cuttings were already rooted, so I put them in 1 gal. pots tonight.

Donlaclair,

Could you explain what H2O2 is? I've never come across that term before.

Thanks!

Thanks! I didn't know it went by that name too! Live and learn!!

Molly, the H2O2 is the chemical formula for hydrogen peroxide. The 2s should be subscripted but it is not allowed here.

I live about 90 minutes north of Canandaiqua, my neice lives just out side of town. I usually try to get there once or twice a year.

Do you have a brug collection. Maybe I have some you might like. I usually have plenty to share during the summer months.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Hi Wrightie! Seems like the entire world once lived in NYS. I once did too. In Binghamton for about 3 years. :-)

Hi theraglady! I'm new to brugs. Just starting this year. I've ordered some seeds for sanguinea and I've arranged a trade for some others. I'd love to have a couple of cutting to work with! I have a small greenhouse right now but it's jam packed with daylily seedlings, hosta seedlings, jack in the pulpit seedlings, dusty miller babies, some sweet basil babies, Siberian Iris babies and so forth. We're expanding it this summer cause it's clear I can easily use twice the space I have now :-) Weather being what it's been lately it's best to wait till late April to send me anything! I'm in the address exchange. We're up in the Bristol Hills between Fisher Hill Road and Rt. 64 .

Thanks!

I have about 60 brugs. I am going next week to Florida to visit some fellow brug growers them the the brug swap in Alabama. I will be very happy to share some brugs. There are a few growers in Syracuse area. I am sure we can get you fixed up.

Funny, my favorite other plants are daylilies and hosta. I have about 200 varieties of hosta, and maybe 50 daylilies. My little green house is still empty. I don't want to heat it, and don't dare leaves my plants out while I am away. They are all under lights scattered through three floors of my house right now. I also have some plumeria, bananas, and lots of elephant ears. I do have about 50 nice million bells plants started from cuttings to put into my hanging pots.

I get to Syracuse about once a month, maybe we can arrainge a meeting then I can give you a blooming size plants so you can have flowers this summer. I may even have some seedlings to share. I had to plant a big bunch of seeds when a pod broke too early. Keep in touch and we will see what I can come up with.

There is one local grower who sells a nice sellection of brugs at the farmers market in Syracuse on Saturdays. He has some nice varieties and has nice healthy plants.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

That would be very nice theraglady! I don't get to Syracuse too often (it's an hour and a half from me) but if I knew ahead of time I could meet you there.
I have one plumeria (I got those pieces you buy at the Boston Flower show) which has never flowered for me in three years. I have about 800 daylilies and less than a dozen hostas (not counting some 80 babies currently in the greenhouse). I ran the greenhouse all winter. It wasn't too bad. Worse month was Jan into February.

Let me know!
Thank you!

Sure will, I will be going that way in May. Actually gpoing next week to the airport, and flying to florida to visit other growers, then to Alabama for the swap.

You need to send me a list of what brugs you have so I can bing you different ones.

I may even get down to visit my neice soon.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Theraglady,

I ordered some sanguinea seeds and a few folks have offered cuttings but I don't have anything here so any you think would be good for a raw beginner would be appreciated. Anything from the plants I have that you'd like to have?

Thanks!
