Does any one know about silkies???
Will they take to baby chickens???Tracey
Silkies do they take in baby chickens?
Hi Tracey ~
You will love the silkies. They are one of the most kind, dosile, laid back chickens out there in my opinion. They make wonderful mothers to their own and willingly take in anything I tuck in their nests. They have hatched several guineas for me! :-) Are you putting them with your little chicks? I would be very careful, watch closely as they establish pecking order. It often takes them a little while to warm up to the little ones. Watch their food consumption, too. Make sure the babies are getting enough to eat and not being bullied off. They should be fine, just watch and make sure. Let us know how it goes and I certainly want to see pics! Your little ones are getting so bid and such pretty feathers!
Belinda
Thank you and I will send more pics . Did you see the other one???
Tracey
Are you going to try tucking them in under one @ night? Curious I am for a lurker........
Nadine
Yes I'm going to do that and then I will take pics of them.... Thank you..
Tracey
I tried that and I didn't have any luck with my silkie, but if you do, let us know.
BackyardHen, everyone ,
I will defintly do that and let you all know as soon as I try...
Tracey
I would be careful with the chicks, silkies although very sweet, like backyardhen said, they will establish a pecking order. Keep a watchful eye on them.
Thank you. I will do that!! The silkies are coming Friday. They
where sapostobe here on wensday but the lady had car truoble..
Tracey
i had a silkie rooster, the first chicken i ever had, he brought up four chicks on his own from three weeks, i found it funny, a rooster from the batch that he raised killed him, its a cruel world out there.
Your silkie looks like mine, they are so beautiful. I love the blue coloring they have. You should be getting eggs from them, they are small but very tasty. Your silkie eggs are probably fertile, maybe they will go broody for you and you'll get some chicks this spring.
Cathy
Cathy, Thank you! My son is in the room and he loves chickens .
He is 7 years old and I'm A pup!!!LOLO....He is the chicken king because he ketches all the chickens. Yesterday we had a rooster get out of the coop so we had to catch it and man he ran
fast.... Tracey
Watching a mama hen would be a great experience for your son and you. Me and DH are having so much fun and learning so much. She's so protective of her babies. If I put my hand in the cage to catch one she's right there pecking me, thank God you can hardly feel it. She's telling me I can look but don't touch, LOL.
Cathy
Cathy,
My chicks came from the farmers store in pacific, mo.
They do not have a mom so I am the only one they know...
But I wish the silkies would help out but the rooster is so darn
perotive of them... The rooster got mean and bit me in front of
my son but it did not heart thank god.... They are full size...
Tracey
Tracey, your silkies are SO pretty! I love their color. Give them a little bit of time to settle in and they will be ok. Right now they are scared to death, as nothing around them is familiar to them. The roo was trying to tell you to "get away from me, I'm afraid!"............give him a bit of space and they will get used to you and your son just fine.
Belinda
Thank you Belinda,
I will do That they are not eating. I will try to hand feed them...

I have a light on the little ones.. They are getting big..
Tracey

I can laugh with you on that one.............as I've chased many around myself! lololol I bet your son was rolling over laughing at you. Chickens have a way of bringing family together in their own way. I love that about them. Thanks for sharing!

When the weather turned cold, My one little silkie girl just couldnt stand the drop! She got really cold and sickly! I ran her out to the big barn where I had the 4 week old chicks and put her in with them and the light!
I had put the light under the broody cage where Mama BPR was to help her keep her eggs warm! The Chicks on the ground under her! So I put my silkie in there too! And here she is today, just fine and dandy and she is a year older than the babies! They get along great!
That is great ... Hope The baby eggs stay warm...please send pics soon. Hope to here from you in 2 days.Hope your mom & dad get well soon..
