Thai Beauty Caladiums. Has anybody ever tried this variety?

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

I just couldn't resist and ordered a few...they look amazing.

Haven't yet tried these. Maybe next season!

Received them today...was amazed at how mature the plants were. Very well packed and wrapped in wet newspapers. Individual plants were taped to the box so they wouldn't shift. I was impressed!

Nice plants!
Where did you get them from?

Bill

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Yes Bill, they do look like nice plants. Bought these ones from Stokes Tropicals.

I've also read many good things about your bulbs on this site. Just placed an order and am looking forward to trying them out.

Thank-You

I grew some in 2005 and was very unimpressed. However, I can't say that they received my best care. I treated them like I treat my regular caladiums, maybe they needed more?

Kathy, I had the one shown in your 1st pic.

Hey Vossner: They really don't look like the sturdiest Caladiums. I'm thinking a Container instead of in the ground!

OH MY Bill!

Great Caladium Shipment I received today! THANK-YOU!

Talk about "Gigantic Bulbs" hahaha! Is your place located next to the Nuclear power plant in Lake Placid? (Just Kidding!)

They look fantastic and so healthy! So well packed too! I really appreciate it!

I have a great little bed under a Royal - sun in the morning/shade in the afternoon - just crying out for something beautiful. It's got some of that Firecracker plant in it, but they're not my fave! Think I'll plant the Red Flash on the inside, surrounded by a row of Galaxy (can't wait to see them!) and the Marie Moir as a border! I'm excited to plant them but we actually got a lot of long-awaited rain today. Being so dry, it's probably in the aquifiers by now, but I'll hold off until it's going to be a little more dry.

Thank-you again!

Kathy

PS: What makes Lake Placid is the Caladium capital? I've seen this before.

I just bookmarked your page Bill. Lots of nice colors. : )
I'll have to check them all out when I'm not so sleepy. I see you are a neighbor, also . : )

Kat,

97% of the Caladiums grown commercially come from this area. The soil out where the farms are is the ideal soil conditions for growing caladiums. The land where a majority of the farms are is a dryed up lake bed and the soil is a rich muck that the bulbs thrive in.

BlueGlancer,
Come on over or give me a call

Bill

Thanks for the explanation Bill - I've been up in that area and have seen the sign "Caladium Capital of the World!" I've gotta say that you have the "best" Caladiums going! I planted them less than a month ago and they're already coming up like I can't believe!

The white Marie Moirs (is that right?) came up first, followed by the Galaxy's, and I'm now seeing the Red Flash appearing! They were incredibly healthy looking bulbs to begin with, but are just doing so well! Thank-you!

Can't wait until they all fill out! Will plant double next year.

Thai Beauty's are doing well also! Decided to plant them in a container as they really are very delicate and I don't think they could take too much sun or wind! Mixed them with ornamental sweet potato vine and it's turning out to be a pretty container.

Does anyone know about Caladium lindenii green and white?

I saw them last week at the New York Botanical Gardens and they were fabulous.I would love to order some bulbs.

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

Caladium Lindenii is not a variety that is grown commercially. I googled it and it is a nice looking plant. Now I have to have one for my collection too!

Good Luck finding one, if I do, I'll post where I found it.

Kat, Your plants came up in the right order. The Marie Moir is always one of the first to come up. The red varieties seem to take a little longer to germinate the the others. I have to buy a new digital camera, as soon as I do I'll post pics of some of mine.
They're looking goooood!! :-)

Thanks, I like it. I'm trying to find time to run over to Lake Placid, but I may just have to order it. A couple of others I like also.

I have another question...I have always broke off the lil jack-in-the-pulpit, cause years ago someone told me that they will put out more leaves if you do that. Does it really make a difference?

Lucy

Lake Placid, FL(Zone 9b)

Lucy,

I can't say I've ever heard it called lil jack-in-the-pulpit.
You mean de-eyeing a bulb?

I'm going to send you a Dmail

That's what I heard them called when I was little. Yes, I meant the flower part. LOL : )

Bill - I just can't get over how well all the Caladiums you shipped me are coming up! So wish I had planted double the amount. Next year for sure!

Hey Bill:

As you can see by this photo...the caladiums are really "popping". Unfortunately, being the first time I planted them and not knowing what to expect...I obviously didn't plant enough. Planted them around Firecracker plants that I didn't think would bloom so well. Is there a problem of me putting some more in now and filling in the holes?

Thanks
Kathy
