crazy weather

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

Well it's been in the low-mid 80's for almost a week now with 55-60+ nights. Hot and dry is what it's been!!!! Now would you beleive that our 5 day forecast is calling for the possibility of frost by Sunday. Starting thursday night our nights until sunday will be in the low 40's and could go as low as the low 30's according to our local weather guy.

Of course we run the risk of frost here until mid april so I shouldnt be surprised by this but everything is in full bloom now!!

I am SOO happy it's finally warmed up here;) With the unusually cold weather this year many of my plant have taken quite a beating! (though not nearly as bad as some of the horrible photos i've seen;(
I'll cross my finger for your good weather dmichael - in only my second year with so many hoyas I rely a lot on the natural weather for help in growth and bloom (which I am suprisingly still seeing a neat amount of on most of my hoyas;) - at this point i am really begining to notice how much it matters...
I wonder if this odd weather will continue in future years!

I think we can bet on it....and it will probably only get 'odder'....

This chance of frost this weekend isnt unusual for us. I was well aware that it could and possibly might happen. My soon to be 87 year old grandmother has always told us not to plant things outside until after april 15th because it can frost up until then here in our neck of the woods.

I've seen it happen many times this late, even later thatn this. Mid April al of the pecan trees,Japanese perssimons, peach trees ,etc. all be in full bloom and then what do you know?? The weather man is calling for frost!!!!

The weather channel isnt calling for it to get as cold as what our local weatherman says but I dont put much faith in either one of them. I can open my door and look outside and see whats going on myself.

I have already shut off the gh heaters, turned the gas off at the main valve and rolled up the sides on the gh but sounds like now that all of might have to be undone.

Just having to relight those heaters is going to be a chore.Local restrictions require that any propane cylander over 100 gallons be set back at least 25-30 ft from andy structure. The gas travels so slowly through that copper line when trying to get the pilots lit that by the time they do light you're already tired of sitting there!! I'd rather go through the hassle of doing all that stuff again though than run the risk of possibly loosing my plant collection.

I had kind of gotten used to the warm/hot weather already and having to run the AC during the day and now by the weekend looks as if the heat will have to come on again. I won't complain though because so many people across the states have had it so much worse and some are still getting it.

It ended up getting down into the low to mid 20's here last night and anything that had fresh new green spring growth on it,is no more.

The pecans, perssimons, crepe myrtles, all of my amaryllis which were about to be in full bloom are all now frozen and the forecast is for frost again tonight but it wont be as low temp wise as it was last night.

Ah...what a shame. I feel your pain. Chin up...spring WILL get here soon.

Marcy, I thought spring was here!!!! After all we have been running the AC's for almost 2 weeks now because its been in the mid-high 80's. One day was pretty close to 90.

I hope everything doesnt end up being a total loss but I know my amaryllis blossoms for this year are 100% gone!!
