I've put a trellis up along the fence by the street (my yard drops dramatically... thank you, builders...) because trucks driving by were eye leve with me on my back porch. I'd thought I'd put in a wisteria but now I'm thinking grapes. I saw some in pots at W/M over the weekend. I don't much care about harvesting grapes, though that would be nice -- I'd as soon leave them on the vine for birds over the winter.
Any thoughts? Anyone in this area have much luck?
grapes in se texas?
I haven't tried, wish I had the room though. Call your ext office, they have varieties that will grow in your area. The bad thing is, it probably isn't the one at WM, but you never know.
Yeah, W/M is pretty indiscriminate about what they offer. I'll call Micah the Ext. Agent; maybe he can give me a good idea. Thanks!
A & M has a lot of information on-line. Pierce's Disease is a big problem to grapes here in Texas. The native Mustang grape is the Typhoid Mary of the grapevine world. It doesn't get the disease so it would make an ideal vine. Unfortunately, it is very aggressive and you would soon find it all over your yard. Look for sources of grapevines that are resistant to Pierce's. I may be wrong, but I believe a few varieties have been developed that will not get Pierce's. Ask about them. I found a link to some articles published bt A & M

Look at the last 5 paragraphs of this one:

Thanks, bettydee! I always say, the more you know, the better off you are.
If you want Mustang grape, please feel free to come take as much as you want off my place! You're free to as much yaupon as you want, too. :-)
Well, I got the W/M grape because it's a Munson, and that was on bettyd's A&M site. Think good thoughts!
QueenB, I don't even know where Shepherd is! I lived in Vermont for a year, and it was so crazy to be able to drive across the entire state in 40 minutes. Makes me think of a mug I saw in a souvenir shop when I was a kid -- The sun is riz, the sun is set, and here we is, in Texas yet.
