Is it dead dead?

My brug which over wintered in the living room went out several weeks ago for some nice 80 degree weather. A week or so ago two of the kids were sick and i fell asleep in their room reading to them and didn't bring it in... :(

So, what is the chance the roots are still alive and will send up new shoots? I believe we went down to 28 that night.

Well, I'm not the only one. That's a relief! I carefully tended mine all winter then was out of town during a unexpected cold night in the middle of about a week of practically summer temps and about 1/2 of them seem to be gone. I'm hoping for root sprouts, too, but so far, no show. Why, oh why, did I put them outside?!!! They had leafed out so well!!!

I would take bets that it only killed the plant above ground unless the pots are really small, the soil takes much longer to get that cold and if the temps were only below freezing for a few hours, your roots have survived.

I have cannas that I left ourside in pots that are 10" and 12" over the winter.. we got down to 19 one night this winter and had snow several times. Lots of feezing weather through the winter but it did not freeze the rhyzomes in the pots. The cannas did not freeze and are growing now.

Just give them warmth and some time to realize they can grow again.

Sorry to hear you lost them so late! I bet that's not easy to take! Don't give up.. just put em somewhere warm and sunny and don't over water.. they will come back when you least expect it! :)

We went down to 22 degrees a couple nights this past winter and many of mine have come back from the roots. Only lost some seedlings and HG. There's hope!

We had such a freaky winter.. we got in the low 20's and teens for almost 2 weeks straight! Hasn't done that here in Lodi for like 40 years. Out of about 20 that were still outside, the only ones I lost were BeeBee, a cherished seedling and Creamsickle. Now I'm thinking BeeBee would have come back from the roots if I would have given her more time... I haven't given up on Creamsickle yet either.. although I will probably just buy another one just so I get blooms soon.

I had that happen in my little greenhouse last year during an electricity problem. All of mine did survivie and put out new growth but it took a while.

Charlotte,

How long was a while?

Last spring I had one in my little greenhouse that I was sure was dead. I set it outside since room is in such demand. I left it there through several late spring snow storms, and many frosty night, about a month after spring really came back it started sending out new shoots and grew to be 5 feet tall through the summer. Just keep it warm now and don't over water.

The wife was in hospital - thought I got them all in [ last Nov - dec ] anyway , the sang is comming back from roots .
***We did lose a few orchids , but I mixed H2O2 and drenched all the orchids and anything else in pots .
***The H2O2 kills the stuff on rotting roots and makes oxygen avaible to good roots .
Hopefully someone else will post about H2O2
1 tablespoon of 3 % , 1 capfull of super trive to one gallon water .

All of mine are kept in pots and froze. I cut them back when I started seeing new growth. It is not too late for them to come back and even bloom. Do not be discouraged.

Well i couldn't stand not knowing and took one of the smaller ones out of the pot and there is definite live root growth!

I did that too Tombaak a while back.. I didn't see anything that even looked good, but I threw em in a pot and put them where I wouldn't see them every day. Creamsickle is the only one that hasn't come back yet.. all 15 others did. Now I'm just sick that I discarded my first seedling.. BeeBee she would have come back I'm sure.

Hey Melissa, tombaak,...Just wondering.. has it survived? I had one freeze and it is now growing... and it really froze.. had a coating of ice on it ... was in a very teeny tiny pot.

Hey Tammie,

Funny you asked, just yesterday I found a small green shoot at the base of the largest one. Still waiting on the smaller ones.

That is soo good to hear! Congratulations! Maybe the others will get the idea too. Mine are completely saturated... been raining off and on for 10 days. Going to float away soon.
