Yay!! The Monarchs have arrived (@ Coots Roost)

NW Qtr, AR(Zone 6a)

First noticed the familiar flutterbye .. lighting on the dogwood blooms.

So, I followed the beauty around the yard, hopin' to get a shot (in vain) .. till I decided to jes sit down and wait it out!

And, finally .. s/he opted for a purnurple tulip. .. LOL

Certainly taint the best photo - but it suits my fancy, for sure!! (hee)

WOW!! What a gorgeous greeting card photo! I love that shade of purnurple! Pitcherpefrect4shore!

I've never grown tulips before. This past fall a DGer sent me some red and white (or was it yellow, can't remember now) tulip bulbs. I've started them in containers so I can move them, if necessary, and am seeing sprouts poking up from the soil. I can't wait to see them in bloom!

What a thrill to see them again! I've seen a few in my yard, and am begging things to bloom so they'll stick around!

Treasures, Park's sent me some tulip bulbs as a bonus last fall. I'd forgotten about them but stuck them in the ground in Feb., and got several blooms out of them. I'm just going to leave them in the ground. If they come up again, great -- if not, at least I had them this year.

Ahh pooh, Janet .. that's a near horriblic shot! ((but mitey sweet of ya))

Geez - I jes noticed the faint colors of one of the Tiger Swallowtails on the trailing Phlox, to the right! ..

I'm seeing a virtual butterfly zoo: Tigers (yellow & black phase), Zebras, several skipper varieties, some tiny white fellas, and a couple of small sulphurs .. including one that I don't recall seeing before, with a reddish-orange band along the edge of his wings. They're fast and flitty lil dickens tho' ..

Nice pic Mp! I think they like to pose.

The tulips are gorgeous - and only my 3rd year to have them. I leave 'em be also .. It's jes a shame that they're such a short-bloom period.

Ha! Last Fall, the squirrels had been heppin' to relocate the tulips. I think they'd dig for the acorns (or rather, 'bury' them) in the flower beds .. and inadvertently, move some of the bulbs around. They've taught me a lil something tho' - that the tulips do look much better in 'patches' than in 'rows' .. LOL

My wild Butterfly Weed have only emerged from the ground, about a week ago .. but are still only about 6 inches tall. I sincerely bleeve that the Monarch has been doing 'fly overs' to check the Butterfly Weeds' progress! .. lol ..

Will be time soon enuff .. to go and dig some more BW from along the roadsides, to transplant into our 'almost done' expansion of the yard.

Magpye - Great photo! Love the colors! And I too love tulips and agree that they are too short lived. I tried tulips for the first time this year in my zone and found another gorgeous flower to love! Your purple tulips are gorgeous!!!! I just wish they were re-bloomers! lol

Janet - I grew my tulips in a pot with some Daffodils. I loved how they all looked together and got lucky and they all bloomed at the same time. (See attached photo.)

Magpye - It certainly does look like you have a butterfly zoo going on in your yard!!! I believe from your description of the black butterfly with the red stripe on it's wings, that it might be a Red Admiral Butterfly. Check out this thread for a photo of it posted by bsharf:
