What Do You Do to Stop Begonias from Getting Leggy

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

I have a Bubbles and it is getting so leggy. As the stems grow out, the leaves drop off. This is the first begonia I have had, is that normal?

It is probably reaching for the light like a lot of plants do if grown indoors. Provide more light to remedy this. You can add more lights (instead of one light fixture, try two for example), increase the time the lights are on (12 hours should be ample but I run mine 15 hours), and/or bring the plants closer to the light (within a few inches if it is fluorescent lighting). For premium growth get HID lighting or put it in a very sunny area (not hot afternoon sun).

I have a couple of cane begonias w/ long stems, 18"+, & only a leaf or two at the end-is it too late to cut them back, will it rejuvenate them or have I let them go too long?

It's never too late to cut back. Make sure you have at least a couple of nodes when cutting (3 would be better). Either water root or stick them in a good potting medium and tent for humidity. Place under lights for several hours a day. They should root in a week or two.

Thistle5: You should post a photo of your plant. My Cane Begonia's are neglected most of the year and they get real leggy and messy looking. I just pruned them back a few days ago. I have had some like you describe, and I just chop them back, and root the cuttings. Cane Begonia's seem to root very easily! Good luck with your plant.

Thank you all so very much. I did not know about cutting back begonias. That is exactly what I am going to do.
