This is only my second butterfly picture. Is this a Monarch? If not, what is it? She's really pretty.
New to butterflies...is this a Monarch?
Yes. Nice photo!
T_D - Lovely photo! Definitely a female Monarch!
How do you tell the difference between a male and female monarch?
Cordeledawg - The males have a dark round dot on each of the bottom wings. It's a scent gland to attract interested females. Ya learn this stuff after raising and releasing over 300 of them! LOL! They are some of the easiest butterflies to determine gender, because I am NO expert! ;-)
Wow great info. Thanks. :-)
Texas_Doodlebug, you got milkweed for your beautiful Monarch to lay her eggs? Great shot by the way!!!
Deborah♥
Deborah - I was in a field taking bluebonnet pictures with my child. We spotted the little gal and took some pictures. There was plenty of milkweed in the field. :-)
Great photo! Everything looks great with Monarchs and Monarchs look great with everything lol
BTW...Becky IS an expert, don't let her kid you :)
Great picture!
Thanks for the info.
Anytime, Texas_Doodlebug! :-) :-) :-) You are welcome to join in on any of the threads and ask any questions anytime! Lots of folks here love helping newbies to butterflies!!!
So true...everyone's so helpful!
Becky, is there another name for ditch lillies? Yours look llike 'MingToy' that I just bought.
Nope, Rox! They are actually the "original" daylily cultivar where all the hybrids came from. They are considered weeds by the Daylily Society! Seriously. And they grow like crazy and can become invasive! I got them from 2 folks here on DG. They were kind enough to dig some clumps out of their yard. lol Most folks hate them, but I just LOVE them! They are still sitting in the pots! LOL I haven't decided yet just where I am going to plant them permanently.
Well, I think they're pretty! Then they are heirlooms!!!
Oh! I think they are pretty, too! And the best part is that they are so easy to grow and they like to spread and I don't do a thing to them. (Though I do. I water them sometimes! lol) I just need to decide on a nice area in my yard for them to do their thing! LOL! I don't know how quickly they spread, but if they do and you want some, remind me the end of this summer and I might have some to share with you. ;-)
I guess they are heirlooms. Their cultivar name is Hemeocallis fulva and it is actually spelled Ditch Lily. (My mistake.) They are the wild variety of Day Lilies. And can be found growing near ditches along roadsides! :-)
Okay, thanks!
