I have several different types of feeders-the "Perky Pet" type with a bottle of solution and the "tray type" (like Hummzinger) as well as a few others (more decorative than anything). The hummers around here seem to prefer the Perky Pet ones and I've had no luck with the Hummzinger types ("my" orioles don't really use the tray type, either). I was curious to know what other folks use and why.
Thanks!
Deb
What kind of feeders do your hummingbirds like best?
Hmmmmm...... I have only Humzinger feeders....... and .... NO hummers! Do ya suppose it is the feeders I am using????? LOL!
I only have the cheaper red plastic ones from Home Depot and they are the Perky Pet. I like the way the others look, but they can be really pricey. I don't get a ton of hummingbirds, but even a few are special to watch. It's my understanding that as long as the feeders are red or you tie red ribbons to others, hummingbirds will drop out of the sky. I'm still waiting for the big drop!
I WANT SOME HUMMINGBIRDS.........................................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are elusive little critters for me-but they do stop by daily. Unfortunately, we are building a deck over the garden where their feeder normally is this summer, so I need to move it. I'm going to get a feeder pole with at least 4 hooks on it so I can hang an assortment of feeders. They do seem to like the oriole feeders, too (on the other side of the yard). They have some honeysuckle vines near the feeder at it's usual location so I'm planning to move the vines and plant some new hummer friendly bushes near the new spot-wish me luck!
Deb
I do wish you luck, Deb. But the birds will find the feeders and the vines. Are you going to move everything before the construction starts? It seems like that would be a good idea. The birds love the Red Cypress vine and it grows very fast. I don't have any seeds on hand now or I would send you some.
Thank you , GardenGram. I do plan to get everything moved in the next few weeks-I like to have my feeders up by mid-late April (usually they are first sighted around here in mid May-I like to be ready!) I will check into the Red Cypress Vine-I think I've seen seeds-is it an annual vine? That would be a good choice while I'm waiting for my honeysuckle vines to reestablish. We won't start the deck until late May.
Yes that vine is an annual, but it reseeds faithfully. I was out of commission re: gardening almost all of last year so I didn't collect any seeds from anything except some White Swan echinacea that I could easily reach from the pathway. I sure miss those seeds this spring.
