Hi All:
I have 2 very nice flats of lemongrass that I started in Jiffy mix.
How do I transplant?
I want to grow in pots. How big should they be.
Thanks

hmm- if you want to grow them in pots- it might be a good idea to do a 2 step process- put them in say a 4 inch pot, then later, in a larger pot.. is that what you were wondering? they can get pretty big, if healthy- my attempts were so so- and i felt the plants would really have done a lot better in the ground- then moved in the fall into pots and brought inside... maybe i'll try that this year! good luck with so much lemon grass. it's one of my favorite spices.
Thanks.
Maybe I will grow them in the ground

BB, I sell my lemon grass at the mkt in gallon pots. Not sure how big your plants are right now (plug size?) but once the weather warms up (and stays that way) they grow pretty fast when fed well. And yes, as sjms suggested, if they are really small best to do the two-step potting up.

Is alfalfa tea good for them? Or do they need something more? I stuck mine by the pond (unfortunately the builders filled that entire are with sand... grrr...) and they don't seem to want to do anything as of yet.
Thanks:
I will use the 2 step method. Do I just take out a plug and stick it in the pot?

yes- you want the plant to have as little time root bound as possible, but you don't want to overwhelm it in an ocean of soil- that's why you increase pot size slowly- sounds like they are good feeders, so it should be a nourishing potting mix...., or you should make sure to fetilize after the plants are reestablished.
brigidlily, yes, alfalfa tea will do them justice. Or you can just sprinkle the raw alfalfa around the plants and let it soak in.
Basically with foliage plants (like lemon grass) a high nitrogen is what you want for good topgrowth, and I bet you already know. A bit of phosphorus will also help their root growth.
And yes, BB, just put your plugs in the pots, water in well. (Fish emulsion would really benefit them at transplant time!)

That's exactly what I used Shoe!
Getting ready to sweat out this cold snap! Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Same here, gonna be in mid-twenties here by Sunday morning, upper twenties Saturday morning. (Think I'll skip mkt Saturday!)
Cover your crops!
Happy Day to ya.
