I got 7 barred rocks from a farm store in town they said they are 11 weeks
old when will they lay eggs? I also have 5 red sex links about 11 days old!
I am new here !
Hello nicksmom, and welcome! :-) Your barred rocks will probably not lay eggs until they are around 7-8 months old. I have had a few lay as early as 6 months, but not many. The longevity of a barred rock is fantastic. They will lay eggs for YEARS. I don't have sex links, so I'm no help there - - - but I have friends who say they are egg laying little machines! Keep us posted on your little ones and we would love to see pics!
Belinda
Yes, I love my 2 barred hens. They are 1 years old. Got from the feeder store a year ago . I used to have 6 barred hens. Anyway they started lay eggs around 7 to 8 months. They are my favorite breed because they keep lay eggs. One time in the winter time, they stopped laying. So I got them some laying pellet and hen stratch. Ahh they started lay eggs again. They gives me two eggs daily since I only have 2 hens. I think I am going to add barred to my order list. No here about sex link. sorry.
Thank you .
Is there a feed that I should put them on other than starter food ?
The barred rocks are so cute they are 11 weeks old and I have 7 females but
1 of them looks like a male and 6 days later I got 5 red sex links 11days old .
I do have pics but I have them at home I have all my chickens in a coop out
side I had to separet them from the red sex link chicks. Why do they pick on
the small? Tracey
I asked the farmers store where they got the chickens from and they said
C.M. Ester Hatchery,Inc. I called the hatchery up and asked them if I could
buy more and they said yes by the mail but I had to put in a order of 25 to30
chickens .
Sorry no pics yet but soon I will share with you all. The day I went to get mine my
son just had to name 3 of them the names are Chianne ,Tammy ,Chris
I just had to lol at the last one he is so funny but my son is 7 and loves the baby
chicks so much he jumps off the bus every after noon and run to see them in the
coop in my yard by the back door.. To funny!!!

Welcome, Barred Rocks are beautiful and I have one red sex link, can't remember when she started laying eggs, she's now 3 years old and lays most every day. We hatched out 6 barred rock eggs last year and they were all roosters, LOL. We kept one until around Feb this year, he got really mean. I would like to add a few hens to my collection of kids, I mean chickens. I really call them my grandchildern. Everyone around me is now a grandma except for me. I have pictures in my purse of my chickens, everyone laughs, and thinks I need a life. They have no idea how wonderful chickens are. I do baby sit alot for my nieces and nephews and they are a great joy. They love Aunties chickens.
Cathy
Cathy, My man thinks I am nuts because I all ways talk to the chickens!!!
But they just give me joy in my life to see the little cutes.
But I have 1 son 7 years old and he is helpping me with the
chickens and he makes me lol when he chaces the chickens back into the coop at night the babys are12 days old now they
are getting big fast. The berred rocks are 13 weeks. Tracey
Hi there!
Yes, they will pick on the littler ones. They do that. However, once they get closer in size to each other you will be able to keep them together.
I hope that you are keeping your little babies nice and warm and waiting for them to feather out before you put them outside. There is lots on info on the web about chick care. The two groups should stay separate until the littler ones have all their feathers. Then there will be some peckign as the big ones assert their dominance, but it should die down.
Now those are some fine looking Rocks! the little Guy in the background too!
Hi all !! The little ones are in a cage and are nice and warm and
when it is nice out I bring them out for a bit then I put them back in the cage to stay warm. More pics will come soon .Tracey
Thank you all. I love the little girls alot and I hope to add a rooster to the lot to keep the cats away from them. I live in the country and the cats are coming to ate other birds.. I am not
crazy about the cats coming a round my home. I love cats don't
get me wronge they are neat and clean but they will eat the chickens. The little ones are in a sepert cage with a red light on
them.. Tracey
good work. SOunds like you are doing the right thing. The chickens should be okay from the cats when they are adults, but I did lose a 10 week old chick to a cat once, so keep an eye out until they are bigger!
Oh I will keep an eye out for the cats all the time! Thank you
very much... Do you or any one know when to change the food over to the adult food for the 12 week barred rocks???
Tracey
Tracey -
GREAT pic! Keep those coming, as you can tell.............we all love them. :-) Your barred rocks should be fine to switch over to the grower ration feed. Just be sure to add a laying mash, oyster shell or something of the like for them at egg laying age. This helps them to keep giving you lots of healthy eggs, year round. You are on the right track, keep up the good work. Your chicks look happy & healthy!
Belinda
Tracey,
You are most welcome and I LUV the pics! LOL @ your barred rocks looking like roosters. I too am a woodworking nut as you can tell by my coops, bators, and brooder I build. I find that my chicken world and my woodworking/building world go hand-in-hand. I enjoy both thoroughly. I think you ought to make your chickens each a sign of their own with their respective names on them. Too cute. Great job on those.
Belinda
p.s. Here is a chest that I built my daughter for her birthday last year.........take a peek! :)
Belinda!!! No Way!!!!! You are a woodworking genious! That Chest is Gorgeous!
Tracy they are so photogenic! Looks like we have some Glamour girls here!
Step up, Pose, turn, Smile!
Your babies are so cute, they do grow up so fast. Have fun with them.
Belinda, your woodworking skill are fantastic. Great chest.
They look so curious, what's up mom!!
Not a hole lot just taking your pics... Tracey
Thanks for the kind words about the chest - - - I wish I had more time to spend woodworking, guys. I try to slip something in every now and then ~ my guineas have the coolest runs to roost on that I built for them. When the darn weather gets better, I will sneak out there and snap a pic for you all. Being able to build things sure has come in handy with my feathered friends flock! :-)
Tracey ~ your barred rocks are so pretty and seem to be posing just right for the camera! Good job!
Belinda
Thank you, they just love pic taken. I wish I could find out if one or 3 are roosters can
any one see on the pics???? Tracey
Belinda you are very welcome and I would love to see more
pics if you have any???? Tracey
It takes awhile to figure out roosters, some will start crowing younger than others. But they will be the ones on guard, standing tall, and watching everything you do. I'll see if I can find pictures of my first roosters young.
All my baby chickens are happy light In there coop....
They where cheapen to say thank you...
Tracey
YAY light, they will be very happy and warm.
Yay the light awh warmth...
