no i have never grown no type of violet from seeds,i thought i had a seed pod a couple of times but they just dryed up,so i thought i would try this, any hints on how doing it

They should be vigorous growers that bloom well! The dragon mix looks lovely.

For seed starting tips, it is the same as for AVs. You'll find links in the stickies at the top of the forum. Also see the other threads like this one http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/568313/ My personal notes on how I sow are http://www.flickr.com/groups/gesneriads/discuss/22059/ As with everything plant, everyone does it slightly differently, but the bottom line is that the seeds need to be:
- sown on the surface,
- kept constantly moist
- kept warm (normal AV temps)
- given light

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

P.S. you might try sowing half of each packet, and storing the rest of the seeds (sealed in the fridge) for a second try, just in case.

you said sown on the surface
does that mean just sprinlkel the seeds on top but don,t mash down

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

It means sprinkle on top, and don't cover.

If you mash down, the seeds might get stuck on the "masher".

A light mister is quite helpful for spritzing the surface GENTLY after the seeds are sown. This isn't necessary, but I seem to get higher germination when I do. I recycle face mist bottles as they put out a gentle spray, and use boiled water (after it's cooled down to room temp).

You just inspired me to try, Keyring!!! Now I know how to germinate these seeds...thank you 'bunches'

Starfly,
Pinetree Seeds is offering seeds from another hybridizer for only $l.75 for 20 seeds. www.superseeds.com They do not name the hybridizer.

thanks ,i will check it out ,i,m trying to find seeds to grow in containers,my grownd is so bad its got where nothing grows in it

(Zone 1)

I checked that link but didn't find any Strep Seeds anywhere.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

They are there under flowers somewhere - they also have gloxinia seed.

Were you thinking about streps for the outdoor containers? It might be a tad hot for them? The Gloxinias might be better for that, or, if you like sinningias, some of the larger ones would love heat and sun. (You could take a look at yuccado.com for those.) But personally, if I lived in Florida, I would probably be growing a ton of bromeliads and orchids
:P

i just want anything that will grow easy and live,i have tryed
orchids ,they all has died on me,not sure what i do to them but they just die in a little while
bromeliads do they grow easy and can i grow them in pots

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Some bromeliads grow well in pots. Some orchids are easier in certain conditions than others - it's a huge family.

I'm rather clueless about Florida - what are the people around you growing? If there is a garden park near you, they might be a good resource? The one near is has a website with lists of plant suggestions.

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

you wouldnot belive there is not one soul around here growing anything, yards are empty.and the one park close by has only grass and trees,i will just start checking around some of the stores and see whats they have far florida

(Zone 1)

I would grow both indoors. I have had Gloxinia's out on my covered deck at times, but in mid-late summer it is very hot and humid out there and no air circulation, so I usually just keep them inside most of the year! I do have about a dozen orchids, but they don't look really great ... I've never been great at keeping them looking their best when I have them on the deck. They do real well when I hang them out in the trees, which I'm getting ready to do! Have only 2 Broms .... One I've had planted in a glass Jar/Vase for a few years. Someone on the Tropical's or one of those threads ID'd it for me and told me to put it in full sun and I won't believe the difference as it won't even look like the same plant but will turn totally red in color. I love the looks of it as is though .... Here's a pic:

starfly, how different is your climate from sarasota? If not all that different, the plants they have outdoors at http://tropiflora.com/ would be good candidates - you could try calling them.... The plants on the website tend to be small/collectors items, but I hear their inperson sale is good so they must have other stuff.....

goodmorning,im in zone 9 ,it gets very hot here, and i have only a few trees far shade, my grownd here is so bad nothing grows very good in it so i plant everything in pots.i will check into the web site thanks

Wow, two of my favorite topics - Florida and Bromeliads! Starfly, check out the Florida Forum, we're awesome! This thread reminded me of last week when I was at Lowe's. They had florist's gloxinia, and I got one for Mom since she really likes them. A lady asked me if they were a perennial, and once I told her they were mostly indoor plants, she set it right back down. Why is it everytime I'm in a garden center I end up recommending things to people? I'm going to start charging a commission!

Keyring, I regularly give thanks to the fact that I live in FL where I can have a whole garden dedicated to bromeliads (I hang orchids in the trees above them). We have a front moving through and all the people in northern FL are worried about frosts - it's too funny. I was just happy it finally rained last night. The only bad thing about the bromeliads is I have to lure out the evil, invasive Cuban tree frogs that live in them. I have to kill them so they don't eat all the native frogs, and I'm not very good at murder.

Starfly,
The photo of the Dibley's seeds was so lovely that I decided to order from T&M. While I was on the phone with them, I suddenly remebered I had a catalog with a $10 offer, no strings attached. So I bought two packages.

Now Snowrose has directed me to a page which explains in detail how to cross streps and has given me some good hints also. This morning I will make Cherry Pie the mom, and I have a few choices for the dad. I hope I don't mess it up!

Pinetree's collection is the Weismore collection. I saw one called Concord on ebay too.

Starfly, Thompson and Morgan is selling Streptocarpus Royal Mix F1 for .99. It is a special offer to people who have ordered from them in 2007. I think I am getting three. You might want to look at the list. You could probably call them to get the list of .99 seeds; I ordered a couple of packages of primrose too.

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

thanks a lot gloriag, i got mine planted sure hope they come up,
there sure not many seeds in a package, i better order 3 are 4

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

For those of you that ordered any of the Strep seeds from T&M... how did they do? I am getting ready to place an order from them myself, and was thinking of trying the Dibley's Dragon mix. Does anyone have any up yet?

Thaks alot... Karen
