Our ducks are going to be having babies soon. Our first time. Is there anything special we need to know once they're born? We are going to let the mamas raise them, but we're not sure if there is anything else we need to do. Special feed, separation from the Drake, etc. Can anyone help?
Having Ducklings Soon
Good Morning desertdigger! I've never raised ducks before but I'm sure we have some "Ducky" people here that will be more than happy to help you out! Oh... Congratulations!!! Duckys are so cute! What type are they?
Not a duck owner just a major lurker - I understand that you are NOT supposed to feed them medicated starter, and that they need access to h20 close to the feed to digest.........do not think that you have to seperate drake.

MQN I also heard that about medicated feed. If you get ducklings from a hatchery, you are supposed to be careful about the water intake of ducklings at first because they can drink too much and die, but I don't think that should be an issue for you with mamas.
They are Rouens, similar to the mallard but unable to fly. I have read somewhere that it may only become necessary to separate the Drake if he becomes aggressive towards the ducklings, or even the mama for that matter. He is somewhat aggressive towards one of the females when she gets off her nest. He absolutely won't allow her to take a break from the nest whereas the other females can get off and eat, bathe, etc.
I always find it fascinating to watch animal behavior. This may sound odd, but doing so teaches me how to communicate with them.

Barb - - - I can't wait to see pics of your baby ducks. They are one of my favorites when they are little. Sounds like your Drake may need to be separated, those mamas need a rest, they do still have to eat, drink, and take care of themselves. Yes, it is facinating to watch how they communicate. We can often mimic their behaviors and they understand us better. Best of luck and congrats!
