Has anyone here in the Pacific NW grown Carolina allspice? If so, I would appreciate any tips on caring for it. I'm in zone 8b.
carolina allspice
Nettie, I never heard of it, what's it look like? is it a spice? Jim
Latin name is Calycanthus Floridus- It's a flowering shrub that is very fragrant
I got a bare-root Calycanthus plant last Spring. It was just a little 6 inch twig with 2 branches when it arrived, and I did not have high hopes. However, it did put on some growth towards the end of the Summer and is now about a foot tall with several more branches. It is just beginning to sprout new leaves. The buds are very small and I had to get up quite close to see that they were there at all. I was afraid it might not have made it through the cold winter weather as a relatively new plant, but it appears to be hardy enough. I gave it regular water over last Summer,to help it get established. They are said to be fairly drought hardy and I would say that it did not suffer when I was away for 2 weeks last August. Another positive for the plant is that it is deer resistant. I planted mine outside my fenced area and the deer did not bother it. We will see what happens this year, as deer sometimes change their tastes.
Thank you for the info, mauryhillfarm- I think I'm going to try it, since yours made it through the winter, even being so tiny- I'm glad to hear about the deer also, as I have had alot of trouble with them in my garden.
