Just introducing myself

Laytonsville, MD(Zone 7a)

Hi, all. I live in central Maryland (Laytonsville area) and have been gardening here for the past 10 years or so. I'm happy to see a Mid-Atlantic forum that looks fairly active here so I thought I'd join in. I have over 6 acres but, of course, most of that is "wild". I try to keep the 2 or 3 acres around the house reasonably tame.

I had a two year period in my life where I wasn't keeping up with the gardening and so lately I've been playing catch-up and there is so much to do.

Hi & welcome Julia!

I totally understand about too much to do...i'm hoping spring fever will help me get a lot done!

Heya, Julia!

I'm playing catch-up here too... :-)

Hey, I looked up Laytonsville... You're not far from me at all! If you get up this way, give me a holler some time... coffee, lunch, nursery-hopping... it's always fun to meet a fellow DGer! We're just outside the south edge of the city limits, so we're easy to get to from 270 or 70...

Adamstown, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey critter. We must live pretty close. I'm just south of Buckeystown although my address is Adamstown. Just relocated our business to the Tech Park between 270 and 355 and I'm loving my commute. Welcome, Julia! I know exactly where Laytonsville is since I lived in the Montgomery Village area for 27 years and my daughter still lives in the Laytonsville area.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

DH just got his office moved from Shady Grove Rd. to Frederick -- about 3 miles away! Sweeeeeet!

Hmmm, it's starting to sound like we need an official Frederick gathering this spring also! I'll corner DH about a date for that... :-)

Laytonsville, MD(Zone 7a)

Hey, all! I lived in Montgomery Village for many years--first in the Walker's Choice Apts. when my first child was born, back in 1982.

Anyway, sure, I'd like to meet some of you gardening neighbors. We drive up the Frederick Price Club a couple times a month--just got a bag of dahlias last week too. I've never done dahlias before.

welcome Blue~
I envy you your acres of wild! all the wild around here tends to grow development signs~~
I wish I had room to roam, explore the natives. (Although the last native I dragged home turned out to be broomsedge, not very highly regarded~~) Trying to scout the old farm behind me before the 'dozers come.

Well, I have to admit that the land our house is on is old farm field. But the good news is that pretty much 4 of the 6.4 acres is wild and will stay that way. The very back 3 acres I'm letting revert to woodland and the land closer to the house is fairly natural. I don't use any pesticides, or herbicides (except Round-Up very rarely). I do mow some paths through parts of the back wild area.

Welcome!
AAAAAAAHHHHH to have 6 acres. Maybe someday but for now I'm trying to fix what the former owners did to this almost acre.

Severna Park, MD

Hi Julia & Everyone! I live in Severna Park. We moved to Maryland 17 years ago from Massachusetts. What I love most about MD is our amazingly long season, long if you've spent a lifetime up in New England that is! These days I'm trying hard to resist the urge to move perrenials - do you all wait until the end of April to do this?

personally, I move them when I feel like it, which is when the weather makes me feel like it. we couldn't possibly have enough cold (here) to refreeze the ground at this point. But I should water in- we are not getting much rain lately.

Adamstown, MD(Zone 6b)

Same here, Sally. It was 28 here this morning but didn't seem to nip the daffodils or hyacinths. I think the key is really to make sure they get plenty of water and maybe a little extra mulch if there is a very cold night and they aren't quite established.
