I have several beautiful hibiscus, and I have one in particular that I love. Had some trouble with scale, but that seems to be cleared up now, so of course I get another problem.....I am getting lots of buds, but they brown and drop before they open. I have looked very carefully, and can find no bugs, so what might be causing this heartbreaking problem?
Bloom drop
Hi
Bud drop can be caused by several things such as changing the plants environment but this one sounds like either gall midge or thrips. Both can be difficult but if you have access to the Bayer product I mentioned either 3/1 or Tree and Shrub that should help. If it's a thrip sometimes you can see them if you take one of the buds and take it apart slowly. They look like little green worms...really little like the end of a pencil size...and they are very fast. They don't like the light. If I were you I would take all of the buds off that plant and throw them away...far far away. Wait for it to bud up again and see if they bloom. By any chance is this a pink or yellow hib? Those are the most common for thrips.
Hope that helps
David
David, thanks for the info....It is a yellow...and I will check the buds very carefully.
