A friend of mine is being relocated for his job to Fabens...can anyone tell me what grows well there? He has plans to buy a house there, and will need help with landscaping. I've never been to Texas, so I'm clueless!
Thanks,
JD
Question about gardening in Fabens, Texas
What zone is that and where in TX is Fabens? There are many zones in TX, all kinds of climates from dry to wet, all kinds of soils just like in CA. What grows in north TX won't in S TX; what grows in the mountains doesn't in central TX and so on............
Ann
Fabens is 32 miles directly south of El Paso. Fabens is in El Paso County.
According USDA Plant Hardiness map:Zone 8a = 10ºF - 15ºF in winter
It's still in Zone 8 according to the new American Horticultural Society
Your friend should contact the El Paso County Extension office
http://agdirectory.tamu.edu/dept_detail.cfm?id=143&table_id=4.0 to get an idea of what will grow in that county.
Here are a few links to get him started:

I would also recommend buying a copy of Neil Sperry's Complete Guide to Texas Gardening. It doesn't cover all plants, but it is a good starting point. As Ann pointed out, it's a big state. This book includes what sections of the state the plants will grow in. It includes ornamentals, grasses, fruit and nuts and vines. A little of each.
Thanks to both of you ! I'll ck. out the links now that I know the zone. I saw Sperry's book listed somewhere, and it sounded like a good reference to use.
I didn't realize the vast differences of zones in Texas.
Thank you for you help!

A good going away gift for a gardener in a new state would be a subscription to Texas Gardening. It is a good help in all parts of the state... http://www.texasgardener.com/

If I did this right this is the website for Howard Garrett. Alot of times his articles are about the Dallas area, but not always. Up at the top of the page you can click on the Dirt Doctor newsletter or the other thing. I can't remember what it is.
