If you have your own semi-reliable thermometer or access to a local (within a few miles) weather station, do you what your lowest temperature was??? Mine was around 5, as verified by three different sources. That would be in the middle range of zone 7. The old hardiness map had me in 6b (0 to -5), but the new one has me in 7 (0 to 10). So for this year, and probably last year as well, the new one is closer. If you ask me though, 5 is still WAY too cold. How did you fare? Were you 'in the zone"??
So How Cold Did You Get This Winter??
Do I qualify as NorthEast?? My coldest temp this winter was -35C or roughly -26 F, which justifies my belief that my zone is more apt to be 3b, if I go by the coldest temp for the zone and not the zone map.
Sure you count! Ouch, that's cold. I should not complain. How many days would you guess were you below zero F??
Below 0F?? I would guess at least( would underline if I knew how ) 30 days.
I don't want to live in your 5a then.lol
We had -17, and oh I don't know..15 nights and one day where it was below zero.
Yes, it looks like there's 5a and 5A!!
Are there any good sites that tell you from your city what zone you are in?? I am not that great at finding things on the internet. I know I have tried but it is hard to find Canadian sites that will point this out? If someone wouldn't mind could you see what my zone is? I am in Sudbury, Ontario in Canada. TIA.
Dawn, according to this map, it looks like it's at the border between 3b and 4a.

My outside thermometer got down to -6 for the coldest night. Makes me a zone 6 for this year I guess.
Thanks a bunch Victor!
One night we made it down to -17 F, but our time below 0 F was much shorter than usual. I don't think we had any days that stayed below 0 F, and only a couple weeks that we consistantly in the single digits. That's a very warm winter for us.
Right now I have reticulated iris blooming in a warm, sheltered spot as well as vernal witchhazel where the ground is still snowy, and the geese are moving through on their way north in large numbers. A very early start to spring!
I know we had single digits, but I'm not sure what the lowest temp was. All I do know was that it was cold...brrrr. I guess Mother Nature was making up for the nice weather we had prior to the New Year.
I refuse to acknowledge the thermometer!
Are we talking w/or without windchill factor? If w/the withchill....we had 1 or 2 days @ -25. Not bad as last year we had several at -50.
All in all it was a very mild winter here in Maine.
Today the weatherman said it will be 55 and cloudy....right now it's 36 and very foggy.
My Grandaughter lost her Huskey of 7 years last week, he was hit by a car. The poor child has been heartbroken ever since and cries herself to sleep every night. Her parents are also devestated as the have had the dog almost as long as they have had her. I suggested maybe a new puppy to help her heal her broken heart and take her mind off "Bo-Bo". For some it helps right away, others can't bare to think of having another dog for a long time. But she's 8 and needs that distraction and something to give all that child love and kisses to. Well her parents took her to see some puppies on Sunday and she fell in love all over again! Please meet "Hank Bo Haogue" the newest addition to the Hoague family.
Our lowest was -7. We're not that far from Mary in Sherrill. The new zone map upgrades us to Z6a, which is probably right, since we have not had below a -10 for many years. But I can remember when we used to get temps in the -20s. Last year we never got below 0. Something's changing.
Lowest temperature was -1 and only once. Most of the time the temperature ranged between 18-28 degrees with a few days between 8-18 degrees. Fairly mild winter.
For the number of days below 0, I meant how many days was the low below 0, not how many days never got above 0! Man, that would be torture. And yes - without wind chill.
Pixie, so sorry to hear about the dog. That's heartbreaking for adults so it must be so much worse for small kids. Hopefully, the new pup will keep her mind off it.
Lowest I recorded this year was 5F. but most winters we get a little colder.
Tom
I got so cold that I didn't talk to anyone. I was oblivious to other people's pain. I...oh ..oops...never mind.
No you're confusing hardiness with haughtiness.
hehehe...I felt like that at times too
pix, that puppy would warm anybody's heart. he's adorable.
Jeez Pixie - I expect those cityfolk to use the windchill game, but not you.LOL
Sorry about the dog, I remember one of our dogs getting hit by a car when I was a kid.
Ok Al...w/out windchill the lowest it got was 15 below.
Thanks for the kind words about the dog, im just happy she's smiling again!
Here in central Burrrrmont (Vermont) I had -30 and a week we did not go over 0 daytime. Can you hear the squeeky sound of snow crunching underfoot?! I stoked the fire twice every night and let it burn wide open! I had to set the alarm. Oh well the worst is over and I have tomato sets sprouting, onions, bibb lettuce, and sp inach. Unfortunatly I still have a foot of snow on the garden beds!
Wow. And what zone are you supposed to be?
That's colder than I've experienced in my lifetime that's for sure.
Pixie: -15 keeps you in 5a for another year.
My zone 6 Japanese Maples I bought at Walmart are budding out - whodathunkit
dunno
It was actually overall a pretty mild winter. It was cold maybe a week at a time and then it would warm up. And the strange weather just continues 2 days ago it was 81 today I have the heat on.
Pixie, that pup's adorable, I want one!!!
Thanks Jen, he has DGD smiling again and looking forward to coming home after school. She had a hard time w/no dog to greet her after a long day at school, now she can't wait to get home!!
