Red Admiral passing through Florida

Palm Coast, FL(Zone 9a)

Saw this red admiral on the screen of my lanai. Neat to see how translucent it is, with the sun behind it. I caught it and sent it on its way, before the lanai anoles ate it.

Very nice, bsharf! I've yet to see one in my area. Lucky YOU!!! Are you further south of me?

St Augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

Amazingly, I saw one sitting on one of my bananas last summer.

This one was through here yesterday. Their bodies see too large for their wings. We are seeing more bfs lately as our plants are blooming out. I love Spring!!

Beautiful!! Yes Don, I have a few seedlings growing well.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

bsharf - Oh, you are far north of me. For some reason I was thinking West Palm. LOL!

Karen & Don - Do you think they are around in central and south Florida? I guess I need to make up some of that butterfly mash. I might be surprised what shows up! LOL! Now to find the recipe again. I need to find it and print it out. :-S

New Port Richey, FL(Zone 9b)

Hey I just saw one .It was really beat up one of it's wings didn't have much left to it.But he was nectaring on those little cling thistles. You know the ones that get the tiny little yellow flowers on them then they get those clinging sticking pointy seeds that cling to your socks and pant legs and give you the little scratching until you pull them out of your socks.Everyone in central florida has them.R.A 's love those.

Indialantic, FL(Zone 10a)

Don,

Those weed seeds really stick to dogs, too!

I saw a Red Admiral on my fence a few days ago, but I didn't know they like the thistles. I see them so rarely I didn't think to look and see what kind of plants they like.

Becky,

I now have those thistles and also stinging nettle and hopefully that will attract the admirals. I planted the nettle in a pot so it can safely be kept out of our way. I have a little seed left if anyone wants it.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Becky................. We have lots of Red Admirals here in the summer!!! Its one of our common Butterflies.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Do you get these Butterflies over there????? Its a Peacock

Hi Karen!

YES! I would love a small amount of your seeds to try!!!! I would love to attract the Red Admirals to my yard. I've never ever seen one before other than photos!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Mark - I get a butterfly called a White Peacock in my yard all the time.

Yours seems to have much more red in the wings. I wonder if they are distant cousins? lol

OK Becky, coming your way.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Karen - What can I send you in return? Anything plants you would like to try? I might have it or be able to get it. Or should I send you some Monarch chrysalises to get the butterflies going in your area? ;-)

St Augustine, FL(Zone 9a)

Unfortunately, the only thing I am looking for now is green shrimp plant. I think I probably have just about every other plant for butterflies. Got anything really unusual?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Green shrimp plants are a tough one to find. But I will certainly keep my eyes open for it! I wonder if seeds are sold online somewhere. Anyone know? I'd like to try growing that plant, too. I'll see what I can do, Karen. :-)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

There was another thread, I think one of Cat's, that had links to places on line, just google it.

I believe Mark's Peacock is a different species than your White Peacock, but both are so pretty.

Becky, it said the White P. feed on water Hyssop, remember that cat you found in the water, was that on Hyssop?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

No, it was an iris plant and then the cat moved over to my waterlily pads. I do have lemon bacopa in my pond also, and it seems I read somewhere that the W.P. like that plant also. I think.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

I will see this year if i can get some photos of our butterflies when they come out to play.......... should be interesting for you!!

Mark

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

OH, Mark! You DEFINITELY have to take and post butterfly photos from your yard! I want to see the U.K. Butterflies!!! Please, please, please!!!! That would be neat since I know you get bf there that we will never see here! Yes! Please do!!!

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

LOL............................ ok Becky, just for you I will take some photos of BF's...!!!
AND
My Garden
AND
My other garden where my other 2 greenhouses are

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Yep! I want to see it ALL, Mark! Leave no stone uncovered and no plant forgotten nor let a butterfly float by without a photo of it! LOL! Just kidding! But I do want to see what you are able to snap a photo of! Anything and everything!!!!! :-)

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

OK..................... you got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does that include moths too???????????????????/

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Yes! We love the moths too on this forum! Some of them rival the butterflies in beauty and size! Show us what you get in your yard over there in the U.K., Mark! I am really curious to see how different your beauties are from the USA critters!

Do you get lizards, frogs, and dragonflies there too? I know you don't have hummers. But do you get lots of birds, too?

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Oh, we have some beautiful moths.............. some are much prettier than the butterflies!!!
Have you ever seen a may bug..........??? They are soooooooooooooooo gorgeous and bigger than butterflies!!

Noooooooooo dont have Lizards............ we do have frogs and dragon-flies and lace wings etc.
Wish we had hummers here............. the nearest thing we have to one is a month, it does the same thing, it hovers and feeds!!
Birds............. god yes, we get alsorts of birds........ sparrows, wood pigeons, doves, blackbirds, starlings, jackdaws, chaffinches, blue tits, great tits even have a sparrow hawk and a kestrel come now and again etc etc
Loads of em...............

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Do you like the new handrail i made today for the garden steps...........

Thumbnail by Mr_Crocosmia
(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Wow! Looking great there, Mark! Nice handrail! Getting the place all ready for showing of the Crocosmias? Your daffs and other flowers are really coming into bloom now! Looks lovely!!! Is that a kitty I see there in the top right corner of the photo???? :-)

What are the day and night temperatures there?

Oh yes! Please do photograph and share some of your creatures here on the forum. I would love to see any and all of them!!! :-) :-)

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Yep, getting ready for visitors.............. this side of the garden REALLY needs sorting out.......... some of the plants need throwing and some sorting out....... the walls need repainting etc. etc etc etc.............. lots to do.
Yessssssssssssss lol, thats one of my kittys......... he likes helping me whenever he can!

When i have finished i will show you the after photo of this same area......

At the minute the night temps are around 38, and the day temps around mis 50's.

Yep, i will take some photos of some creatures for you later on.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Oooh .... that's still pretty nippy! Though 50's during the day isn't too awful cold. As long as you are getting some sunshine, looks like all the plants are pretty happy! :-) Look forward to seeing some photos of everything once you've got it all set up for visitors!

Just curious, how "big" is your yard. Mine is 80 ft. X 125 ft. (Of course, there is a house sitting in the middle of my yard! lol)

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Yep, its still nippy, but not that bad.............Yeah we have had some lovely sunny days, which is why i am cracking on with the garden! Oh yes, the plants are fine, they look very healthy...........
Oh yes, you will see some photos when i have everything sorted and ready for visitors!!

My garden is about half the size of yours, but without a house in it...............LOL

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

So ...... actually ....... your garden IS about the size of my yard!! LOL! Just one more reason that I want to see photos of your garden beds! :-D (Hee, hee!)

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

Yes i would imagine it is around the same size as yours.............
Becky Cook, are you planning on pinching my ideas?????????????? LOL LOL LOL

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Well ya know, Mark ...... pinching something is the greatest form of flattery!!!! LOL! (wink, wink!)

Actually, I am interested to see what flowers go together and just general garden bed layout ideas. I see something I like, but then use the flowers I prefer to create something "similar" but not quite exact. I do NOT have a creative mind, so I need to see other folks creations to come up with ideas. Which is why I am a visual person and not a person who can "imagine" the possibilities! But I do come up with some good container ideas. I am more creative in very small areas, not a large garden bed. Too overwhelming for me and too many choices right now until I learn more about gardening. Sometimes it stinks to be a newbie gardener because it's all so overwhelming and there are limitless things to learn about this wonderful newfound love!!! But ...... I will take the GOOD with the bad of being a newbie .... because I wouldn't think for a minute of giving it up! ROTFLMBO!!!!!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Well ............. guess what!!!???

I actually saw a Red Admiral today in my yard! It was flying all over the place. Checking out all the plants I have. I was hoping it would land on something to let me know what it likes in my yard. And then it finally rested on a piece of wood. And sat there opening and closing it's wings. I have no idea what it was doing. Stretching?

Anyway, I ran into the house to get my camera. And of course, when I came out to take a picture, it decided to leave. :-{

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

LOL.......................... They do a lot of that sitting and opening and closing wings......... i have often wondered what they do that for!

I wouldnt worry about what plant goes with what Becky................ If you like them, use them!!! I have a whole load of plants in my borders that you probably would never put together......... But once they all grow into each other its wonderful to see!! If you are going to do a border, use every inch of it,
