paw paws

Bolivia, NC(Zone 8a)

I have a question about what to do with/about the seedpods(paw paws) from my magnolia trees.
There are LOTS of them.
Is it safe to mow over them and let the mower pick them up/cut them up?
Ihave a blower/vac but I don't think that will work-I think the blades are too fragile.
I am hoping for a solution other than pick them up and throw them in the trash, but if thats what I have to do oh well.
thanks,
Lauren

My son in Charlotte has dwarf varieties of Magnolias and said the paw paws are 3" in diameter. The mower "chops them without hesitation" ... were his words. Maybe you will be that lucky!! LOL

That's cute, I have never heard Magnolia seed pods called paw paws.

Okay, now I'm confused (not hard to do). I thought Paw paws were a native fruit, and this is what I find when I Google;

"The paw paw is the largest edible fruit native to America. Individual fruits weigh 5 to 16 ounces and are 3 to 6 inches in length. The larger sizes will appear plump, similar to the mango. The fruit usually has 10 to 14 seeds in two rows. The brownish to blackish seeds are shaped like lima beans, with a length of 1/2 to 1-1/2 inches. Paw paw fruits often occur as clusters of up to nine individual fruits. The ripe fruit is soft and thin skinned."

I'm new to the area, so maybe I'm just flat out wrong? Is the local Carolina paw paw a magnolia? Are they edible? Sigh. I have soooo much to learn!

No, you are correct, there is a Paw Paw tree and the fruit is called paw paw. It must also be a colloquial term for the magnolia pods

Thanks, ardesia :)
I need all the help I can get learning what's what....

I believe the coinage term of "paw paw" is not correct for the Magnolia tree. While the fruits of both the Paw Paw and the Magnolia tree are similar, I could not document the term "paw paw" for the Magnolia. The term does not seem to be used with it.

I may have been misinformed about what to call them as I learned it as a child
and never learned another term.
What should I call them?
Either way they are mowed up now!
