My back is sore and I'm burnt to a crisp, but this is the first time I've ever planted bulbs/tubors in Fla. I planted 6 Agapanthus, 6 Tropicanna Canna, 12 Eucomis (Pineapple Lily), 24 Dahlias (Cafe Au Lait, Lilac Time and Akita) and several Caladiums. I just can't wait for something to poke up through the ground! I'm excited!
Can't wait!
Let me tell you that Pineapple lily is really worth getting excited about Kat. I've got some small ones but they won't bloom this year so I'm really looking forward to seeing yours bloom!

Hi Debbie:
I actually have never seen these plants around here before. They do look great from the photos I've seen and seem relatively easy to grow and pretty adaptable. Our soil is pretty sandy here so it drains well, and I've got about a 2" mulch cover of pine bark which keeps it fairly moist. Planted them in clumps of 3 about 12" apart. As I mentioned, this is the first time I've planted bulbs. It's usually "instant garden" around here with transplants. This is really more exciting - anticipating the outcome! .
Another real pretty one is Eucomis comosa if you can find it. They aren't real commonly grown but are super bulbs. Sounds like you've got just the perfect conditions--do show us some pics when they bloom. I think what you have is probably Eucomis pole-evansii or Eucomis autumnalis, depending on the variety.
Hi dmj: The ones I got were Eucomis autumnalis. Hopefully they'll do well here, it's just strange that I've never seen them around here. But then again, our local Home Depot and Lowes really doesn't carry anything that's out-of-the-norm.
Looking forward to the day I can snap a picture! HA!
I bought 3 Eucomis pole-evansii several years ago. They bloomed and produced more plants the 2nd year. The 3rd year I left one in the ground in its sheltered area, and it came back. I've since given away all the bulbs except for the one in the ground which continues to survive. :o)
It manages to get to about 3 ft. I don't find the bloom too exciting, so one is enough for me. Maybe I would like the 'sparkling burgandy' better?
Kat, I'm sure yours will put on a much better show than my lonely one does since I'm stretching the zone.
