Herbie,

The following link tells you some basic info. This gourd is kind of a tropical dish. Uh, happy eating!

Round here they call it a mirliton... but the DH say's in Chile they do call it a Chayote. I had never seen one till we moved to Swampville.

Frank,

They are in the markets all around town at this time of year. I saw them at Foodtown the other day, as well as Kobacher's and Hannaford's (where they always have the best produce). I tried to grow one last year, but it was a no-grow. I like to eat them like an apple - very tasty indeed!

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

They are very popular in South Louisiana, lots of people grow them, and they are made into all kind of dishes. Check the recipe forum, there were some merliton recipes recently.

yuummm I love Chaote/Mirlitons.. I think I have a good recipe for grilling them somewhere.. I first had them in Costa Rica where they cut them up and added them to stews along with yucca roots and other veggies..

went to hannafords today and bough 5 of them at 99 cents apiece.
