Purple heart question

Piedmont, SC(Zone 7b)

Do purplehearts need sun or shade?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

They can go either way. If you grow them in the sun the color will not be as intense than if you grow them in the shade. They seem to do their best in bright shade.

They're hardy, too! Don't even need mulch.

I do not know the term "purple hearts". It is not in the Plant Files. Do you know the botanical name?8-))

If this is the Wandering Jew plant, I have never seen it in flower beds in my area. It doesn't sell as small plants at the garden center to plant in a flower bed. It looks gorgeous in hanging baskets and the true dark color of the leaves show well in the fall when it is somewhat cooler. What I'm familiar with is the "striped" leaf variety. Of course it is treated as an annual here. It couldn't possibly live over the winter!!!

There are many. many varieties of Tradescantia, all commonly known as Wandering Jew. Ohio is a bit cold for them however. You could grow them outdoors during the warmer months and take cuttings in the fall for a pot plant to have indoors during the winter.
