I know it is after they die downb but when do they do that? Mine have finished blooming and I really want to move them ASAP. They are in the bed I want to plant for a butterfly garden. What would happen if I moved them now?
When can you move daffodils?
As long as you move them and replant them (somewhere out of the way if necessary) they will be ok. The key thing is to allow them to finish their lifecycle ie leave the leaves on as this gives the plant food to replenish the bulb for next years flowers. Don't cut them off or tie them, just let them die down naturally.
Try not to disturb the roots, by moving the whole root/soil ball and all. I moved a bunch a couple of years ago just after flowering, but did disturb the roots as they were brought from out of town, and they went into early dormancy. Did'nt get any blooms last year, but this year they're all blooming like crazy.
I move them a lot during or right after bloom also. That's when the soil is soft, and the weather is mild. I can tell which ones are crowded and need divided at that time. If I wait until June when the foliage is dead I forget them, procrastinate, or chop the bulbs up when digging them. Also, like you, I often decide I want some other plant in that area.
As stated above, it may affect the bloom the next year if the bulb roots are stressed, so try to take some soil with the roots and do the move during or right before a cool cloudy rainy spell. I have some blooming like crazy this year that I moved last spring.
Good luck!
