It's supposed to be a rediscovered ancient veggie that's all the rage on the west coast now. Has anyone grown it or at least eaten it? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salsola_soda
Anyone Tried Agretti?
Interesting reading! I'm a native West Coaster and have never heard of this plant. Will definitely be learning more!
We grow it. Our bed is small so I start everything in flats and transplant.

kimmers, you need to marry an Italian, then you'll recognize a huge variety of vegetables and be able to forage in the landscape! LOL!
Starting Agretto (salsola soda) this week or the next. "Seeds from Italy" said make sure the ground is wet (no problem here!) and while it likes salt marshes, fresh water is OK. Planting Okahijiki aka Japanese Land Seaweed (salsola komarovi) near it to see how the two compare.
A discussion on the two salsolas and confusion between them:

Apparently the Agretto seeds do not keep past June. The package from "Seeds from Italy" is 100 grams and looks like it will plant an acre.
Or more....
One note on the marshes. If you live close to one, try to harvest before it goes to seed. I recently found where it can get to be invasive in the right conditions. It is, after all, a species of tumble weed!
