what soil mix should I use for rooted cuttings?

New Port Richey, FL(Zone 9b)

I just got rooted cuttings and I'm not sure what soil mix to use.I've got them in 3parts potting soil-2 parts peat moss-1 part perlite. They are about 12 inch cuttings with well developed root systems and nice healthy leaves. Any advice would be helpfull. Don

Hey Don,

With your cuttings already having well developed root systems you are a little ahead in the game.

But without knowing how well draining your potting soil is I would make some adjustsments. One of the main problems that we encounter when trying to root brug cuttings is; the soil mix staying too wet and causing root rot.

This is a mix that I prefer to start the rooting process for brugs. 1 Part Peat Moss, 1 Part Vermiculite and 1 Part Perlite. Since that your cuttings already have well developed roots you can go ahead and pot them up using a heavier mix. This is just a suggestion, using the mix you already have them in, add at least one more part Perlite, maybe 2 parts. Also you can add a little vermiculite. Just try to get a mix that is well draining, but will hold some moisture too. It is better to have to water the plants a little more often than to have the mix too heavy and have the plants develop root rot.

Hope this helps.
