For those of you who didn't see the pics on my other thread - - - I simply HAD to share. ☺☺☺ A proud momma, can you tell? After hours of up and down ALL night long Friday night, we finally had six little Blue Salmon Faverolle's make it out and all of them but one made it except one. I can't tell you guys how exciting it was to be able to hatch my very own babies in my homemade incubator!!!!
Here is the first baby to hatch,"Lucky", still in the bator, all wet and goohy:
My New Babies Made itHooray!!!!
Congrats!!!!!!!! Oh im so happy for Ya! I know you must have been the proudest Mom ever when they started hatching! they are just toooo cute! I see you and I have the same " brooder" cage, even the same color! What are you using in the bottom of yours? I have been changing out newspaper everyday.
I never have courage to name mine until they get feathers. You have beautiful children TGM!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am thrilled with them, to say the least. :-) Eufaula, I love this brooder, it gives them SO much room to roam around in and I can regulate the temps really well! As for their bedding, I am using standard shavings - - - simply because I also have lambs that use it. One of those things that I have a LOT of, so I put it to good use! You have to put a small amount down (1/2") when they are little, so they can get around easily. It is super absorbent, and I only have to change it once weekly.
Soferdig - - - lol @ you not naming yours until they have feathers.............I'm not patient enough to make it that long!
Congratulations. They look lovely.
Thanks Zeppy ~ they are as sweet as they can be - - - ¢¾¢¾¢¾
How cute ! Lucky you !
It seems that the ones I hatched from my bator are more calm and tame than my other chickens.
Maybe because they've been handled, even before they hatched ? If that's so, maybe your new little
sweeties will be sweet and tame for you.
It also seems that I am a little more fond of the ones I've hatched in the incubator too. Maybe because
they indeed are more tame, or because I took part in the care of them (turning, monitoring, watching)
to bring them to their new life. Whatever the reason......... it's fun hatching your own, isn't it.
Congrats on your successful hatch.
Yes, it is VERY fun hatching your own eggs and I couldn't agree more with you on playing favorites. How could you not? I mean after 21 days of multiple times daily turning them, monitoring them, caring for them - - - they have a special place in your heart for sure. I knew it would be exciting, but I had NO idea it would be a THRILL! I can't wait for my next batch to hatch out............starting tomorrow they should begin to pip! Wooooo Hoooooo!!!!!
Then I have to wait 21 more days for the next ones..........grrrrr....patience is NOT one of my better virtues! lol
Belinda
Oh I'm so excited and jealous! That's the whole reason I am getting straight run silkie chicks so someday I'll get little babies, too :)
I'm so happy for you!
I end up naming mine really early on as well. I love naming chickens. I'm getting out all of my creative naming before I have any human babies to bestow names upon! lol.
Is that a guard dog lurking behind the brooder? LOL
Pati (a lurker who never owned a chicken)
BYC, you will LOVE having the babies to hatch. It is a blast! SO worth the 21-day wait!
Pati ~ that is "Mother Hen" Gracee. She thinks that SHE is their momma and want them out of the brooder to check on! She is rotten to the core. She has NO CLUE that she is a dog. lol
Oh my goodness! How exciting. I can't imagine how neat it would be to hatch your own chicks.
The pictures are so sweet. This might be a dumb question but did you buy fertilized eggs or did one of you own hens lay them?
Congrats!
Laura
Thanks Laura. For now, I bought fertilized eggs on eBay until my pullets grow into hens. They are only 4 weeks old now. Got a ways to go, huh? And, I did want to build an incubator simply to see if I could hatch eggs out. Everyone talks about how difficult it is and how trying it is..............I found it to be just the opposite. :-) By the way, no question around here is ever dumb. Thats how we ALL learn! How are you chicks doing?
Awwww Teddy Bear babies! Now thats a really neat substitute Mommy! Oh Look , look, they have little feather duster tail feathers! too cute too cute!
Soferdig - - - they have really grown! TOO cute and thanks for sharing!
You came up with some great names for your chicks, I love pete and repete. I bought some green eggs on ebay and can't wait to get them into the bator. Hatching is so much fun, to be there when they hatch is just amazing. I told my 4 year old nephew today that we were going to have green eggs and ham later this year and he looked at me and said GROSS. He said there are no green eggs, he's coming back when they come in the mail so he can see for himself.
Cathy
Oh My, Cathy!!! Just wait until Your Nephew ,helps to collect them from the nest!!!!! Isnt it fun to give Children another reason for WONDER!!!! There just isnt enough left in this Natural World for Children to be amazed with, or I should say, Not enough taught and shown to them within their reach and "Care"!
Love the story, Cathy. And Eufaula, you are so very right, children these days need to know where "things" come from and how they got there. It is great to watch them in total amazement!
oooooh , Soferdig, Chicken Tractor ,Ala Condo Style....Cool!!!!!!
Soferdig - - LUV the pic! And you bet 'ya - - - that stance would scare anyone off, right????? lol Great tractor!
I want to say CONGRAT!!! I know I am late to say but I haven't been around this forum for a while until this am! Ohhhh I love it.. Last night I showed him the chicken magazine (order catalog)... look at this chicken. He said go and buy some! I said yeah but not this time.. i will wait next year, but after looked those pictures.. Now I want it now! LOL..
Thanks Mini - - - so glad you popped back over here to the chicken world. We miss ya! What type of chicks are you wanting? Tell us more, tell us more! lol
Has anyone raised Aracanas? How do you train them not to fly into trees and to use the chicken house?
Soferdig,
I have several Aracaunas. Have your had yours free ranging? Are they used to a coop all? My aracaunas know when the light comes on at dusk in their coop, its time to return quickly because Mom has their fresh food and treats. As for the flying part, you want them to be able to fly and get onto a tree limb to avoid predators if they are free rangers. Tell us a bit more about your current set-up and maybe someone can help. Good luck!
Belinda :)
Here is a pic of one of my Aracuanas (in the middle).
Glad I am back ! LOL.. I haven't decide what I want to get... I like to get mixed so it will look pretty colorful mixed in our yard. I like to get buff but they didn't do well in heat weather here in LA. I don't have any rooster but would like to get one for as pet. We still missed our beloved RedDevil rooster who went missing few years ago.
They are so cute and tiny. Tracey
Right now I am raising them in the Chicken tractor. Then they will have a move to the chicken coop. A 25'X12' enclosure with a roost and protection. After free ranging will they be hungry? If so then I will be able to attract them. Then all will be good. What do you think? Hey I just learned that the light colored ones lay Blue eggs. I have 2 of them. Bummer I wanted "Green eggs and Ham".
Cathy ,
I have 7 barred rocks that are 11 weeks old and 5 red sex links
1 or 2 weeks old should I keep them on the starter food or sould I put them on something else?
Love the pics of your baby chickens!!!!
Tracey
Soferdig, after free-ranging the Aracaunas will most likely only be looking for a soft place to land (so to speak), a drink, and maybe a little maze or regular chiken feed to snack on. I have found it best to leave a light on for them, they come right back to it, ready for their feed and fresh water. LOL @ your green eggs & ham. Guess you will have to settle for blue eggs and bacon? lol :) Let me know how things work out for you!
Tracey, for your 1-2 week old chicks - I would leave them on the starter food (should be somewhere around 24% protein) until they are about 8-10 weeks, then at that point you can switch them over to the grower ration (18%-20% protein). I would love to see pics of your babies..........I enjoy seeing everyones babies so much.
I couldn't leave out one of my other babies...........here is "CoCo", my bottle baby lamb. She thinks she is a dog, and she thinks I'm her mama. She is a sweetie!
