How long should I wait for new hoya plants to bloom? Tips?

Miami, FL

I was just wondering how long it takes for new hoya plants to bloom? I bought a bunch of Exotic Angel hoyas at Home Depot about 3 months ago. They were very full pots and are growing fine, but I do not see any punducles on any of them yet. On the other hand, I bought a rooted cutting on ebay around the same time and it already has one. What is your expereince with Exotic Angel hoyas? Any tips that work for you?

NICE plant!!!!

You know...that is a really good question! I have found that only time and patience helps...or almost killing it so that it blooms out of survival mode. Hoyas and Cats are similar: they do everything on their own schedule!

If I could answer that question my hubby could retire:-).

Emarini, I know exactly what you mean. The EA hoyas that I see for sale are always full and lush, but rarely do I find any that have peduncles. I have their picta, lacunosa, curtisii, polyneura, and brevialata (big question marks here because EA's are usually mislabeled.) All of them consist of twenty or thirty small rooted cuttings stuck in a pot, so they have the appearance of a mature plant but may actually be too young to bloom. They are putting out lots of new growth, like yours, but so far, very few peduncles. I hope that this will change as they get a little older.

Hi ..

It took about a year before my mature Hoya bloomed. Everyday I look to see if a flower (peduncle) is forming. Love the colour but am never too crazy about the smell and the sticky stuff it secretes. Sure does look nice though :-)

Who is also waiting and wondering how long it will take for my cuttings to grow up and flower:)

Thanks for the responses. I've become a little obsessive...purchasing new hoyas (about 12) and checking them out a couple of times a day for the pundacles. Hoyas are a bit addicting. I've had 3 Hoyas, flowering regularly, for several years. I was expecting the same from the new plants.

The plant hanging in the front of the picture above is a Hoya Bilobata.

I guess we'll just wait and see...

I love the hanging containers that you are using for your hoyas. Beautiful plants!

I get the hanging plant holders at Lowes. That's the only place I have found that style at.

I just purchased the same Hoyas last year around October from the Lowes.
No blooms on any of mine either! ..I was wondering the same thing about the EA Plants. I am hoping after this summer, having them outside will do the trick.
My Hindu Rope did put on some new growth. And my the rest are still alive here inside. Thats a plus!
Your plants look happy and sure have a nice looking home. I am sure you should get a bloom out of one of them soon.
Good Luck~

Emari...be careful about your IDs....the Exotic Angel plants are famous for wrong names. It might get you fouled up when you look up something about your plant and it is the wrong care due to the wrong name....

I love your baskets. Do you have the plants in pots inside the coir or are the planted directly in the matting pot?

Thank you. I have caught a few mistakes in the naming of the EA plants. I treat almost all my hoyas the same. I water most frequently as I have noticed they tend to grow faster when I do. I do not water the ones with smaller leaves as much because they get root rot easily or the leaves get soggy looking.

Mine are potted in a soil and perlite mix in the coir.

It's amazes me at how these(EA) plants grow and bloom in different areas. I have several EA plants all purchased form either lowes or home depot and have had great success at getting them to bloom and almost all of them with 6 months to a year after purchase.

My hindu rope bloomed within 6 months after buying it and it was only in a 6" basket when I got it. EA has started including H. lacunosa in their shipments to my area since about mid summer of last year and just about every one of those that i've seen has either been in boom or loaded with peduncles already. Mine was in full bloom when I bought it.

Elizabeth, all of the EA plants that come to my area are coming out of FL so I would think that the ones you guys are buying down there would be comparable in size and blooming abitlity to the ones we are getting here. I've never had any problems getting the EA plants to bloom but as Carol said you have to keep a watchfull eye on how you are growing it as chances are it is most likely mislabled!!

The only 2 EA plants that I would 100% positively be able to ID correctly would be the hindu rope and lacunosa, kinda hard not to get those 2 right!!! The polyneura and australis were pretty easy to ID from them also!!
