(Zone 1)

Eunice: I had never heard of Neem Oil until reading things people wrote here on DG. I just did a google search and found this site. It says something over on the right of the article about being for orchids and something about mixing it with murphy's soap and a gallon of water .... you can read about it here:

http://www.ghorganics.com/SupremeNeemOil.html

I thought it was something just for plants, but apparently it can be used for all sorts of things, even on the skin! I have major problems with very dry skin...maybe I should try it!

I'm going to do some more reading on this stuff, sounds like it's really good!

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

thanks far the link, i done a search on dg and found where allison use it on violets
mix it and add dish washing dertgent with it and mist them

if its good far your skin thats what i need i can,t get rid of this i have ,took medicine from dr.nothing helps i still itch like crazy

(Zone 1)

I have the same problem Eunice. The older I get, the worse my skin gets. I need to go back to a Dermatologist to get something. I have very dry sensitive skin, worse in the winter time! It seems like every time I come in from working in the yard, or with plants on the deck, ... I am itching or have some kind of rash on my hand or leg! It's miserable!

Where did you buy your Neem Oil? Can you get it at Home Depot or Wal-Mart? I think I really want to try it. I like that it's not harmful.

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

heres where i bought mine www.wormsway.com

i didn,t get this itch untill i got this perm,dr.said something to do with whats in perm

the root focillia is infected on my head man sometime i scrach till i bleed and so sore at times, can,t lay my head down.

wonder if you can wash your hair in it,you wouldn,t belive some of the stuff i have used far it

(Zone 1)

Oh Eunice .... A Perm did that to you? Seems like the Doctor could give you something to put on it so it doesn't itch so bad. Itching causes more scratching, which causes more irritation. It's an unending cycle! Sounds like maybe that Perm Solution was way too strong! You should go back to the salon and show them and ask what they think! I haven't had a perm in years ... I can't stand the smell of that stuff, so I just live with my straight fine hair! But, I do color my own hair ... so I have enough chemical's on my head already!

I'm going to that site where you got your neem oil to read about it!

Thanks,

Lin

Yes, you can wash your hair with the kind you bought from Worm's Way--pure, cold-pressed Neem Oil. You cannot with what I believe is called Greenlight Neem Oil.

When my daughter went to public school, there was a terrible lice outbreak and I wanted to avoid her getting lice in her very long hair. I researched then washed her hair with Neem--many health food stores sell a Neem product to kill head lice. It kept the lice out of my daughter's hair when so many kids had it. My daughter's hair was shiny afterwards, although we had to use a very strong-smelling conditioner afterwards to cover the Neem smell.

If you do a google search, I believe that the twigs of the Neem tree are used as toothbrushes in India and Indians steep the Neem leaves and bathe in the water to treat allergic reactions. I guess they must be VERY used to the smell--don't think I could bathe in it.

(Sorry I'm so off topic)

(Zone 1)

Oh, you aren't off topic PlantMomto3! I have been hearing bits and pieces about Neem Oil and thinking about using it for house plant insect control. I did read somewhere that it smells pretty bad and I have a "problem" with chemical smells, so I wonder how I would handle the smell from Neem?! It is great to know that it's a natural remedy for so much and not chemical!

As Starfly wanted to know, I too am curious how to use it. How much to mix with water, to use for African Violet's and House Plants? I am sure the bottle will have directions ... and I always use less than is specified on the label.

It doesn't smell like a "chemical." It smells more like a bad onion. When I first started to use it, I thought it was pretty stinky. :) Now, it doesn't bother me at all. It may sound weird, but I associate the smell with healthy plants now. I use it inside and outside. I try not to use any pesticides--I have 3 kids and 8 dogs and I don't like having harmful chemicals around. I do keep the stronger chemicals, but use them if Neem doesn't work.

The one thing that I haven't quite been able to get used to yet is fish emulsion. Yuck!

I like the 100% neem oil myself, and mix it with a commercial surfectant/emulsifier because they are very effective for making neem and fertilizer stick. Currently I am using a brand called CocoWet, but there are many options. Dishwash and murphys reportedly work too, but I haven't tried them. Dishwash, I believe, is an emulsifier, but doesn't make it stick. (But don't quote me on that.)

Please remember to use warm water, keep shaking the bottle, and avoid sun.

Also, if you have a LOT of plants, please wear a mask (and maybe even goggles) because you don't want to be breathing in a lot of the oil spray. And, the surfectant/emulsifier may be irritating to the throat, lungs, eyes or skin, even if it is safe.

P.S. I hate the way it smells!!!! I haven't managed to make that stink=healthy plants association yet! LOL.

(Zone 1)

Well ... I can't stand the smell of bad onions! LOL .... and I definitely have a BIG problem with irritation to my throat, lungs eyes and skin! I can't be around any kind of bug spray, even the supposedly mild stuff you can buy at the grocery store ... causes breathing difficulties with me! I even have problems with gasoline fumes at gas stations sometimes! Sooooo ...... I don't know if I would be able to handle the neem. I am not currently having any insect or disease problems with house plants, knock on wood! I have two huge Gardenia Bushes in the yard that the Flowers are covered with what I think may be Thrips. For a long time I thought it was some kind of Aphids, but these teeny black bugs are only on the flowers and you can see them crawling all over those beautiful white blooms! Someone told me about something called Bayer or something like that, but I despise having to use chemicals. Another person told me to just use soapy water, that it would suffocate them if they were aphids. But, I'm pretty sure they are thrips and not aphids. I need to find something to use to kill those little critters, and I'm sure my hubby would spray it for me. I have some of that CocoWet stuff I got from the Spray & Grow Company I bought some fertilizer from a couple of years ago. I wonder if it's still good. Will have to go out to the shed and search for it. That would be a good product to use to help the spray stick.

That's cute PMto3 .... the stink/healthy plant association! I don't think I could ever get used to it if it really stinks!

PlantMomto3
i finally open my bottle ,it don,t stinkit smell something like penut butter, wonder if i got the right one
its called dyna-gro pure neem oil

Nevada, MO(Zone 6a)

Star, You have the right one. I don't think it smells that bad.

PlantLadyLin, I have asthma and the Neem doesn't bother me. I use Dawn dishwashing soap as emulsifier. Not sure what CocoWet is, sounds interesting. Must go check now.

Just think, my poor daughter let me wash her hair with it. She was so afraid of getting lice she agreed. In my former life as an attorney, I heard several horror stories of children using RID to get rid of lice and having really bad reactions/consequences. Now that's a pesticide that I wouldn't want on my head!

(Zone 1)

Here's a link to the Spray & Grow site .... they sell the CocoWet stuff ...

I have heard of using Dawn as an emulsifier and I will have to check out that Neem. Do I remember someone saying to make sure it's pure neem oil? Is there a brand name, or is Neem the brand?

Wow, if you have aasthma and it doesn't bother you and you can use it on your daughter's hair with no ill effect's it must be great stuff. I really need to check it out. I despise using chemicals! Not good for Any living thing!

I was never blessed with children, but I wouldn't want Rid on my head either! I know that's what a lot of people use to kill head lice on their kids, but I think it's Too Toxic!

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I use Coco-Wet with everything I spray on my plants.

Lin, the neem you want is Dyna-Gro Neem. I use it in the house and smell doesn't bother me either. And wait till you see how it make the leaves look on your plants. Even your AV leaves will have a healthy glow!!
