perhaps they are for some. These are the last of my camellias for this year. Some are already the worse for wear.
I hate to see them go, it is so nice to see such a mass of bright color in the garden all winter. The two largest in the middle are a good 6" in diameter.
Not really tropicals but......
They're gorgeous. I love Camellia's, wish I had a yard full of them.
Jackie
They are tropicals for me - I, too, wish I had some, but appreciate looking at yours - thanks for sharing!
we can't grow camellias so especially a big thank you from south Texas...
hey
they're tropical to me
I had one bloom in my GH this winter and it was a HUGE thrill
Great pic, they won't grow well here either in summer, too hot and humid I guess.I use to have a few but had to let them go.
Thanks for the pic!! :-)
Hot and humid are right up their alley. It has to be those cold Iowa winters that scare them. LOL
Ardesia: What a beautiful variety you have! My mother had many Camellias in her yard and she loved to float the blooms in little silver dishes. Thanks for the memories!
I only have one in the yard. It bloomed nicely but is pretty much done for the season. You've inspired me to plant more! Here's one of the few pics I took.
Deb
Deb, what a fantastic photo! Your flower is a beauty too! I love Camellias and have a dozen or two in the ground and just bought 6 more. (Obsessed?) But, how can you go wrong with something so carefree, evergreen and blooms when most others are sleeping?
What beauties! It's wonderful to see something besides white. We're getting the hugest wet snowflakes I've ever seen!
:) Donna
You are one tough perennial girl, I am such a wuss about cold weather. SC in August is pretty awful but I that is when I am happiest. Can you believe one of my children lives in Breckenridge, CO? Thankfully he comes home to visit because the one time I was out there I froze and it was July!
You have to be tough otherwise you'd either go crazy or freeze your butt off....lol!
great blooms!
Just beautiful, Ardesia. I used to have a few camillias but they always would get rained on at the height of their blooming. Yours are just so pretty.
And Deb, yours is so striking too. Your camera sure handles that color well.
They are like winter roses.
Ardesia, up here in Massachusetts you'd freeze! We have camellias in green houses to enjoy only. The Lyman Estates greenhouses has camellias blooming New Years to end of February. This year I went for the first time and was captivated with the flowers. Yours look so pretty too!

Here's my favorite bicolor one:
What beautiful photos Sedum, LOL, I did freeze (and baked too)! I spent 18 of the longest months in history in downtown Boston. During the summer the heat radiating off the granite sidewalks and buildings was worse than SC in August and one winter was more than enough for me; you guys have to be tough to fight traffic and weather.
I did visit the Lyman Estate and loved it but it sure made me homesick. They had some beautiful specimens and I remember spending way too much money on plants for my windowsills. :-))
Ardesia you are lucky to grow camellias outside! So interesting you lived up in Boston. Of course in the city with all the asphalt in the summer (and unfortunately few trees in downtown Boston) it would be hot! Hey the 'Big Dig' -- the 15 year traffic project in downtown Boston is nearly done (they've been saying that for a while now!....)
So isn't the Lyman Estate the best hidden gem in Massachusetts? I love stopping by this place. They have so many varied plant sales that keep you coming back. They just had an orchid sale and next is an herb sale. Fun place to go to. It would be fun to see camellias growing outside. Have to come down where it is warmer year round of course.
Sue
For me there were many hidden gems; I did take advantage of my time there to explore all the gardens I could get to. I think one day Elm Bank will be a showplace. I was there when the Mass. Hort Society library was still at Horticultural Hall and on rainy days I used to pour over their most amazing collection of gardening books.
Now the big dig, that is another story; we lived in the financial district and I can still hear the beep, beep, beep as the cement mixers backed up all night long and the clanging of the pile drivers all day. I really don't expect to see that finished in my lifetime. LOL
