When to take plants out of the dark

Dallas, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi,

I have had my big EE and a big Clivia in my utility room for months, since it got cold. I did not really mean to put them there at first, I was just getting them out of the way. But then when I saw they were doing okay, I just left them there. That room is kept dark most of the time unless I need to wash clothes. So when is the best time for me to take them out of hiding and introducing them back into the greenhouse. I did put the EE in the greenhouse about a month ago and it did not like that and l lost a whole big leaf. I only had 3 to start with. It was a little one that I got at the end of summer last year. Anyway, when should I move them from the utility room to the greenhouse and then from the greenhouse out into my yard.

Thanks,
Jesse

I don't live in your zone so I can't comment on the appropriate time, but if they have leaves on them I would introduce them to the light slowly--put them out for an hour or two then back to the dark, and gradually work up to having them out there all the time. If a plant's used to low light conditions and you go throw it in the sun all of a sudden, it will be unhappy but if you work it up to that gradually it should adjust fine.

Thanks ecrane. I will put them outside in the greenhouse a couple of hours each day until they get used to it.

Thanks,

Do you have a tree or shrub you could put them under for a few days. A greenhouse, even for a few hours, can be pretty bright this time of year and they could get sun scald in a very short time. Perhaps you have a bench in the greenhouse you could put them under and just slowly expose them to light.

Well I took my EE out and put it next to my big banana which gives it mostly shade. I will take my clivia out and make sure that it does not get too much sun by putting it in a corner that does not get that much sun. I was also wondering about dividing my Clivia because it has another little plant about 8 inches tall beside it. What is the best way to divide it? Thanks for all the help.

Jesse
