Hi,
Anyone out there from the Idaho Southwest? I am relocated from Calif. and am valiantly trying to grow something...I found out the nurseries are only doing business from April to July, so this gives me a clue. I have a greenhouse and have been keeping plants surviving but now the weather is warmer, they are coming out of dormancy and wants to BE FREE! Last night, the weather dipped to 28, so there you are. I live in Council, Idaho and really hope to find someone to give me some advice. Thanks, guys.
Need help in my new zone 5 area
typist, I kinda understand the problems you face with cold weather and late dates for the final frost. Some plants can handle the 32 degree barrier but if I were you I'd keep whatever I have sprouting inside the greenhouse unless or until I was sure they could withstand the late frosty mornings. We have an April 24 final frost date here and to be honest you're in a very similar setting. We had 23 f degrees this morning to my surprise and it was nearly noon before the temp got over freezing. This afternoon our first daffodil bloomed. The daffodil is snug up against the foundation and facing the south. We have hundreds of other daffodils and tulips barely a few inches out of the ground in far less sheltered situations. It'll be another 2 weeks before any of them bloom. At least the forsythia are beginning to show they'll blossom within a month or so. Our sun flowers seeds have begun to sprout. This afternoon I counted a dozen in the area where we had 9 last year. They grow to be about 6 feet tall and the Goldfinches just love them.
Hey typist, you could look over in Rocky Mountain forum also. Most of us are in zone 5 or lower, with several living next door in Montana, plus a few visitors from Washington. They know a lot more than I do, as I'm just getting started with my gardening education, and am learning quite a bit more than I did growing up in Texas. Good luck.
typist, My mom's younger brother (my uncle) Lew lives in Whitebird, ID. He must be reasonably close to you. You're definitely writing on a board where few have anything in commom with your gardening problems. Most contributors on the PNW region are in zone 8. You have more in common with those along the Snake River in zone 4-5. The area you're in is nice ... very nice. Don't tell anyone else how nice it is or you'll soon find too many others moving in nearby.
