I was just looking at all these beautiful bloom pics here and started thinking that it would be nice to do another hoya swap. I for one am in need of a hoya fix but with Liddle order I can't afford any more for now....lol. Would anyone else be interested in this? I don't remember who did it before but if needed, I would be happy to set it up. I know temps up north are still iffy, but we could set a date in April for mailing out. What does everyone think?
Thanks, Kim
hoya swap for spring?
Kim, I would do it again, if others are interested. It really seemed to go smoothly last time, but then again, I didn't actually do any of the work........
Sara
how does it work?
detrick
Detrick, each of us first signs up, the "moderator" works out which person sends to which other peson (i.e., A sends to B, C sends to A, B sends to C, and so on), and we mail our cuttings out to the person selected for us. Once we all receive our cuttings, then we are all happy-hoya-nuts. At least this is how it's worked in the past. (I confess to being the organizer two years ago, so have a bit of insight.
Christine
I would like in if at all possible? I am new to hoyas but I have a couple... do we send cutting or do we send a plant? Please let me know ...
Thank you
Susan
I would love to be included please.I am fairly new hoya "addict" so I don't have many uncommon ones but will be happy to share what I do have : )
Thanks,Nancy
thanks for the info ceedub. i'm just starting out really. everyone probably already have what i'm growing. would it be possible to mix in a plumeria cutting or two with hoya cuttings? i don't want to taint the pool. LOL
detrick
Detrick.....no worries about what you have or don't have. The purpose of these swaps is to share with friends, and any plant from a friend is dear to me. Many people include other plants or gifts for their partners, but this isn't necessary. The main thing is to just have fun!
:) Kim
Count me in. A hoya swap sounds good to me. I am going to have to start looking for some cuttings that I can swap. I would love some plumeria cuttings.
Karen
Yes I agree that a plant from a friend is so special... Could I ask are there any hint or fact that anyone of you could give me about rooting a hindu rope hoya? I dont seem to be able to this one... I have tryed several times... in water, in dirt.. Nope not me just call me hindu killer... :-( Thanks for any help..
Susan
Susan....I have had trouble with this one as well. My plant, which is really just two little cuttings in a pot, is just now starting to come back to life after being babied all winter. I rooted them in water during the summer, but in winter I just can't seem to root them well. My only trick to rooting tough ones is humidity and bottom heat combined, but it's not foolproof.
Kim
Susan...keep your soil lose with lots of perlite...don't keep it wet, let it get vaguely damp, and not bright light. Hope that helps.
Also...I would like to add:
The hoya swap is for FUN. It isn't (for me) what booty can I get that I don't have... It is about sharing and friendship... Also...it isn't about who sends the most or the most varied...it is about what can I do to share. Again, this is my opinion. There ARE folks who feel shamed because when they read WHO got WHAT from WHOM because they only had a few H. carnosa cuttings. SO WHAT! I cherish these because I can use them for presents, to grow up trees, as special gifts....
I would like to add that I think posting what we RECEIVE is great...but perhaps leaving the donors' name out might be better.
Just my thoughts,
Carol
I think it's my turn to moderate the trade. Kim, do you want next time? I think everybody would probably be up for another trade in the fall.
I'll write another post with instructions tomorow (Thursday). Would March 26th work for everybody as to a send-out date? Any later than that will be in tax season, so a busy time for many. If anyone feels that temperatures may be too cold in their area at this time, speak up. I would recommend April 23rd as the next logical date, as tax season would be over and temperatures should be acceptable mostly everywhere.
Opinions?
Mark
Mark that is fine.....I just wanted to see if people thought it might be time to do this again. I am already pretty busy with school and organizing our roundup next month here. The first date would be better for me probably, but I could do either.
:) Kim
Tag---- Mark is it..............Carol you said it just great....................Kim wonderful idea to start Spring off with a trade. We may need to wait a few weeks longer some places like N.Idaho are still getting down really cold at night.....Sandy
Thank you everyone for the hints on the Rope hoya.. Does anyone know where I could get a Sweetheart Hoya Kerii Variegata?
This is going to be a fun swap...
SUsan
Susan, you have Dmail :~) -joanne
Since March 26th is apparently to early for some colder areas of the US, then April 23rd will be the closing date for sign-up, with packages to be sent out the following week.
D-mail me with your name and mailing address if you want to particpate.
For our neighbors in the north, as you have probably seen in the forums there has been an increase in security for packages going over the border, and packages with live plants are liable to be destroyed, with a possible fine for the sender AND sendee. So no Canadian addresses in the swap, sorry folks. If there are enough Canadian members who want to participate, I would be glad to do a separate list for you folks to swap amongst yourselves. I would think six at least would ne neccesary. Post here in this thread if you are Canadian and want to participate, and I will keep a tab.
You needn't have a large collection of rarities to participate- a single cutting of H. carnosa will do if that is what you have. The point is sharing, as Carol mentioned, and anyone can do that. It's the luck of the draw- you may get a single common cutting or you may get several rarities. Adds to the excitement, don't you think?
Also remember that cuttings are preferable to rooted plants containing planting medium- especially in states with finicky inspection agents, like California and Texas.

I'm an newbie hoya addict and I am in.Feels good to say that out loud : )
Nancy
I can play tradesies so long as anyone wants some succulents instead. The only hoya I have that is big enough to prune is my DS-70, and s/he hasn't bloomed in a year so I don't even know if that plant is healthy enough.
I'm very jealous of you guys doing swaps in the US. I for one am desperate for a new hoya fix (despite the thought of having to move, and therefore what am I going to do with all these plants?!?). It would be nice if anyone in Europe would be interested?
Hills :)
A hoya swap, how exciting - count me in certainly! Any new package in the mail adds to the excitment of our house construction these days - dont worry I wont send dusty plants;)
I would like to be in also. I have more common hoyas, but I also have a dischidia, and a couple epiphyllums.

Hills............ I am jealous too. Sounds like they are going to have a lot of fun. Wish you and I were closer to do a swap. It is that time of year when we are all desperately wishing for spring. I for one want to buy lots of new things.
Bea
I'm also in for the swap. It will be my first swap meet. I've traded before, but nothing as exciting as receiving an unknown surprise. I can't wait.
Hi,
Could anyone tell me if this swap is still on? I have not heard a thing yet :-( I want to swap Hoya's....
Susan
I would like to be added to the swap! Thanks
Dianne
Yep, the Hoya swap is still on! However, since it is still apparently too cold in some areas to send cuttings now, and tax season is soon upon us, the cut-off date is April 23rd. Send me a D-mail with your full name and address, and when the time comes I will put all the names in a hat and send you your swapee's address. I am not replying to D-mails, just collecting the address' now.
Me too, me too.
I'm sure I can find a hoya or two or three that need a haircut.
