Two of my favorite bloomers

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

This is a relative of Pandanus...Freycinetia cumingiana. The F. arborea ('ie'ie) grows wild out here too. The orange flower is striking....and as a cut flower lasts about 2 weeks in the house. I always forget to cut flowers for the house as they seem to be all over outside and I guess I forget the boundaries!!!

And...the blue (some say green) jade vine. It is growing over the old chicken coop we use as a shade house (when it isn't flowering...). The racines are about 3-5 feet long!!!

GROAN!! I am SO lusting after that green jade vine.... I nearly had one last year but the seller never followed through. SOB.

Freycinetia cumingiana sure has a more attractive flower than Pandanus LOL. What a cheerful bloom.
Thanks for posting.

I have looked for a source for that Freycinetia for a long time it is a native correct? Had a friend in Maui that was going to send it but he has been off line for sometime. Beautiful plants. I do see a philo verricosum under all that jade vine LOL.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Dutchlady--I've seen the jade vine at Zone 9 Tropicals and Logee's recently.

bwilliams--Logees has the Freycinetia

Thanks for the suggestion but both report them out of stock.... :-((

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

The only word for both of those are georgeous!!

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Dutchlady--keep your eye out on both places, I'm sure they'll be back, you just need to keep checking so that you're first in line when they get them back in stock.

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9b)

logees has it back in stock

I think it was the jade vine that Dutchlady was looking for--but that's good news for bwilliams who wanted the Freycinetia.

thanks for being so alert but yes, it was the jade vine I am after!

Concord, CA(Zone 9a)

Aloha, those are stunning. You are so lucky to live in Hawaii, my favorite place on earth. I couldn't keep the jade plant I had alive over the winter. so sad.

DutchLady... being fairly unconscious much of the time, .... was it ME that offered a trade with a Jade Vine...let me know, in a DMail please. I do have a few left.

Jade vine flowers are used for leis...so if they are kept cold, they last for maybe a week.

Carol you have Dmail
:-D

Coral Springs, FL

I planted a jade vine about 6 months ago and it has really gotten huge. It hasn't yet bloomed and doesn't seem to be getting ready to. I tried rooting it, but they didn't make it. Later read that you have to use hard wood cuttings. I'm going to try again soon so DutchLady, if you're interested let me know.

Ginger...the best time to take cuttings is in the fall...Aug/Sept. The best size is stem about the width of a pencil...inbetween wood and green. I have done it and had about a 10% success rate as I don't have a mist house.

Jade Vine bloom on one + year old wood...and then after blooming the BEST idea is to cut back.

Thanks Carol - you're always such a good source on tropicals. I don't have a mist house, but my orchids are in a screened area that gets misted twice a day. It has special screen to cut out part of the sunlight. Think that might work for the cuttings?

Well...I can't say. I built a little box, covered it with plastic and they were in a totally humid enviornment. Just take tons of cuttings...that's what I did!!!
