Heres a seedling red bottlebrush bush.We started these almost a year ago and they have been blooming since they were 6 months old. Nice bright red form.
:-)
Floral fireworks,
Really?
I just took a cutting of my friends bottle brush tree last night. It is soo cool. I have the bush. Do they bloom continuously? Mine blooms in the spring..and fall.
very pretty..did yo ugrow him from a cutting?
Rj
Rj was grown from seeds collected in San Francisco area by a co worker. They bloom pretty much all the time in the greenhouse.
:-)
Really..any special nutrients...I was just checking the plant files..and I can't remembe if it said acidic...
These like alkaline soil. They originated in scrublands in australia. Most outback areas there are alkaline not acidic.Forrested areas tend to be acidic, because of the humus from the breakdown of foliage.
Thanks for telling me that..what are the supplements containing alkaline..I have everything but that in my journal..potash.lime?
Rj lime is added to make soil alkaline.we don't add anything here as our water is rather hard anyway. so the soil is slightly alkaline anyway.
:-)
Kyle, you have the best plants. Those are great. Is the sunshine coral tree the same as the seeds I have? 4 of them I rotted, but the other 4 are going to make it. I'm glad I didn't start all at the same time.
Okay..thanks...I have a bran new bag of lime. Thanks
Wow great pictures Kyle!! I just planted a weeping bottle brush tree.
Linda this one doesn't seem to come up variegated from seeds.
rj, the bottlebrush should do very well in Houston with little care. They bloom (sporadically) year round here. l just planted a pink on and can't wait to see it bloom.
It bloomed nicely last year, but only once..and I noticed in the neighborhood they bloom alot more than once..
I moved it a couple of weeks ago to a would be sunnier location during the summer. the only problem might be was that the previous location was in the dry zone of the garden, new location has more moisture retention, but well drained..
You used to see bottlebrushes all over the place until big, big freeze that wiped out virtually every bush in Houston. Can't remember the year - seems it was '90 but I could be all wet there. Just recently have the nurseries started carrying them again and there is a big variety of types - miniature, weeping, regular, etc. - I guess "improved"..

aah..yes...it was...1989/1990...the year I arrived...and thought..what are they talking about..it's horrible cold...ice ice.
I just took a cutting of my friends bottle brush tree..it's very beautiful..actually we had bought all of them at the same time. He just lost both of his shrubs in the freeze a few weeks ago. Mine is a bit fried on the botttom but looking pretty good top side.

I grew up with these bushes in our side yard - very nice. I don't see them much anymore.
I am seeing more and more of them in my area..of course...I live 2 blocks from our local nursery..so we all sort of shop there.
I would love to have a pink bottlebrush. I attempted growing from seed but that didn't pan out. I would also love to have the dwarf one, but I find them expensive and I always get cheap attacks when considering buying one. Then, I regret it.
Is the Hanae Rae ( or something like that) the same as weeping bottlebrush? Is this OT? if so, my apologies.

Very vibrant, Kyle!

oh wow...the weeping bottle brush is the one I just took cuttings from a couple nights ago. It really is a nice looking tree.
Voss, my pink one is a baby still or I would send you a cutting. I checked yesterday and I think I see the beginnings of buds. Can't wait to see if it really is pink.
I found this Australian site which lists 'Hannah Ray' as a cultivar of weeping Callistemon (Bottle Brush).
http://www.anbg.gov.au/callistemon/index.html
They also show several with yellow flowers.
oh I remember that website. That site got me bottlebrush crazy, which led to my buyings seeds, which led to nothing. Thru that website I learned about the pink and the yellow. Great site. Ardesia, lucky you to have the pink.
Hannah Ray is really popular in my area but I personally prefer the stiff, up and outward growing variety.
I have several bb lining our property. I know they can take temps down to 25 degrees without batting an eye. I also have a yellow and purple one that hasn't bloomed yet. You can get different colors at Caldwells nursery.
They bloom off and on from spring to fall. Right now I have 100's of blooms on mine.
The only problem I have had is the tag that came with the bb says it only gets 6 to 8 feet tall. Mine are over 12 feet and still growing. Once again I should have checked out Dave's' site before I purchase a plant for a certain spot..
oh ...Jacaranda...beautiful. I am just about to plant one. Any suggestions...? well drained, drought tollerant...acidic, non acidic? How ya doin?
Rj
