Well, I found thripes on my Birthday :~(((( Bummer!!! I got a pic of one.
Debbie
Alliance with Thripes...Can you spot em??
Find the little devil on this pic.
I dipped some plants in Neem Oil on Friday. I read all the sticky links trying to figure out what to do. I've had the blue sticky traps hanging on the plant stand ever since I put together the plant stand just for insurance.....guess that didn't work. Any advice would be great!!
Debbie
Edited to say I've got a closer pic if yal can't find it. Thought I'd make it a challenge. LOL

I think I see it....
I don't.....at some point help us????
I don't see any thrips either! C'mon .... give us a better hint, or better yet, tell us where to look so we can see what those little buggers look like!
Check the bloom. That's my guess.
Ah ha! Thanks Melissa..I went and magnified the picture..LOL.. and I do see him on the pollen on the bloom.Creepy Little Bugger. Now at first glance all I thought was "Wow what a gorgeous plant" Hope you can beat them at their dirty game Debbie .It would be a shame to lose that beautiful AV.Let us know how it turns out.
Nancy
OK, here he is, not on the pollen. Nancy, I don't see what your seeing on the pollen. Show it to us. I hope I can get em too. On my birthday Friday I completey dispudded all my plants. :~((((( Heart Breaking, I'll tell ya. I even took tweezers and got the buds that were just beginning to form. The ones I found thripes on I dipped in Neem Oil. It took about 15 min to get this guy to come out from hiding.
Anybody know of anything better to use than Neem?
Here's the pic.
Well That will teach me to try and be a smarty pants.LOL I guess it would help if I actually knew what to look for huh? .I have never seen a thripes. When I magnified it really looked like a tiny bug on the pollen.Must have been just pollen.Debbie,.After you circled it I can see it..I really can!hee hee So sorry you have to battle them.I bet it was heartbreaking to see and have to disbud your plants.Wish I knew of how to help you get rid of them.Hopefully someone with more knowledge and experience dealing with them chimes in.Good Luck!
Nancy
There must be different kinds/colors of Thrips. Those on your AV look to be kind of gray in color. I have those insects (Thrips) on my Gardenia Bush outside. It's a Huge bush and the thing gets covered with tiny dark black thrips crawling all over the flowers. I have yet to get rid of them. Boo Hoo .... can't enjoy the flowers with those little buggers around!
Lin
Here's a link to info on thrips. http://www.steverd.com/violets/thrips.htm I didn't know what they looked like either, I just remembered reading about seeing the pollen being spilled on the petals may mean you have thrips. Last week I was just lookin at a plant, thinkin 'Wow, that's a beautiful flower!! Can't wait till they all open and I'll post a pic!' Then I saw the pollen. So.................I got in the Stickies and read all I could find on the subject. Somewhere it says that if you blow on the bloom it'll cause the thrips to come out where you can see em and they move slow. So I went back in and blew on the bloom and sure enough a couple came out. This was a different plant. Optimara Millennia. They hide in the blooms and buds so you have to disbud em.
Lin, do they just get on the flowers?? Do thrips really do any damage other than make you feel like something crawlin all over you?? LOL
Wish someone would jump in here and tell me what to do. Steverd list Neem but I haven't had a chance to do em all and I'm sure it's a once every 4-7 day thing.
The ones on my Gardenia Bushes just seem to be on the flowres ... and they don't seem to be slow as you said they are on your AV's? I wonder if I really have Thrips, or if it's some other type of annoying, ugly little bug? The ones on the Gardenia's are teeny little black buggers and I haven't seen them anywhere else but the blooms! Will go now to the link you posted and read about them!
Thanks!
Lin
Lin, I think thrips are mostly on the booms of AVs so it would make since that's where they are on your Gardenia's to. I'll bet there's zillions of different thrips. LOL
I didn't get any advice here, so I posted a question on a Yahoo Group for AVs and got tons of help. So if yal are interested they say to put your AVs in a trash bag or plastic storage box, saturate a couple papertowels with Raid for flying insects, set them in the box/bag and seal it up for 24 hours and fumicate the nasty little critters. You don't even have to take the blooms and buds off. One time usually does the trick, but may need to treat em twice.
Debbie
Debbie: Thanks for that great advice! If ever I get Thrips on my AV's I will definitely try the Raid in The Bag! I have always been scared of wetting the leaves of my AV's even though someone explained it to me on here recently .... I just can't bring myself to give them a shower, so to speak! I guess it has something to do with always hearing for so very many years, to NEVER get the leaves wet! But, placing them in plastic bags with Raid saturated Paper Towels sounds like a plan! Now .... if I could just find some plastic bags about 6' tall and around for my Gardenia Bushes in the yard! LOL.
:)
Lin
Oh thank you Debbie! What a clever idea and it makes perfect sense.I wonder if that wouldn't work for cyclamen mites that some peoples av's get plagued with too?
LOL...Good luck finding baggies for those gardenia bushes Lin : )
Nancy
Well, last Thursday on my way home from work I stopped at Wolly World and got 2 40x20-7 plastic boxes and a can of Raid for flying insects and started the process. I just finished this morning. I meant to take a pic for yal, but kept forgetting. LOL I crammed as many as I could get in the boxes without hurting the leaves, put the saturated papertowels in, closed it up and let em sit for 24 hours. Now time will tell. I'm not gonna cut off any buds and see if they're gone.
I have an Optimara Millennia that sends em up fast and that's the one that had em the worst so it shouldn't be long. That one and about 12 more got dipped in Dyna-Gro Neem Oil and fumicated. LOL
Debbie
Well Debbie its sounds like you have been busy. LOL Keeping my fingers crossed .Can't wait to hear your results.Good Luck : )
