cutting rosemary

Greenville, SC(Zone 7b)

My rosemary is about 3ft x 3ft and about 3ft tall. I usually only take cuttings from it but its getting a little big. Will it hurt it if I really cut it back? how much is too much? Thank you for any info you might have.

I'm pretty sure DeBaggio advises not cutting back the branches by more than 1/3, same as for lavender. Early spring is a good time to trim them, before they put on a lot of new growth but after danger of a hard freeze (which can damage newly cut ends).

I used some loppers and took off everything that was crossing the garden fence line. Has not slowed the plant down that I can tell. But I did not cut all the growth by topping the entire plant.

It is about the same size as yours, willowsrain.
