I planted pansies and violas in mine, after amending the soil with some worm castings and some chicken manure compost. This helped cover up the dead stumps and give them more time to come back from the roots if they're going to.
6 of my presumed dead brugs are coming back to life..... slowly.
What to do with all those pots that contain dead brugs
What a fantastic idea, Mary...
It looks beautiful. That poor brug will be growing up and giving you enjoyment before you know it.
LOL... I don't notice anything dead in the second photo!
My poor dungeon brugs are anxiously awaiting the day they can get out into the daylight!
Not much longer. Yipeeeeeeee
Great idea Mary! Thank you for posting that! I have so many stump pots.. they look awful.. I'm gonna doctor em up too.
Thank you, Mary, for the great idea. The pansies/violas/etc. will help to shade the soil and retain moisture, and their shallow roots won't compete with the Brugs at all. Thank you for sharing it.
GardenGuyKin, that's a great picture! I could take a very, very similar picture in my basement now. I just noticed the other day that my Brugs are suddenly starting to put out a lot of new growth. Somehow they sense that spring is just barely beginning. I notice that yours don't have any larger leaves - do you intentionally remove them? Mine tend to grow a few scraggly large leaves during the winter, and I sometimes think it would be best to remove them, from both a spider mite and energy-wasting perspective.

Hi Erick
They sure do seem to know spring is near. They get very little light and small amounts of water. They usually don't grow very many leaves during this time in the basement. Once they get oudoors they recover quickly. I'm sure your getting anxious also.
Well at least we can look at Mary's beautiful planter for now!!
:)
Very nice Mary!!! I didn't see the brug in picture number 2 until I enlarged it :) I have a couple planters that I could (and should) do that to.
It was in the 70's here today. That, plus Daylight savings has got me wanting to go nuts in the yard. Unfortunately, it was also a big NASCAR day today so we stayed in LOL !!
God bless, Margo
Daylight Savings time has always meant Spring planting to me. For one thing I'll have some time with light after I get home from work and can do things all week long instead of just the weekend. Its more fun to do things a bit at a time than to try to cram it into a weekend when you have other fun things to do also. I brought home composted chicken manure, and other things like mulch to work into the tiny shade garden I have in the back yard. It's fun to work that stuff into the soil and see how dark and rich it looks. The little things that separate a gardener from 'normal' people. LOL
can you believe how hot it was today, in sandiego. my pansies shrivled up a bit.
