Just came back from a walk and am having an overdose of that undescribable smell. Any adjectives....
Describe Bradford Pear scent
What a beautiful tree!
The BP has no odor to me. But it's blooms are georgeous, when the freeze doesn't get them. This year we got lucky!
Josephine, is the Mex Plum blooming now? If so that must be the other tree I am seeing. I knew they weren't the BP's, but wasn't sure what they were. The delicate free form of the tree is so pretty, where the pear is uniform and upright. I need to get one of those. Botanic Gardens just planted some small ones that look like that, along University with some Redbuds, bet they will be stunning when they get larger.
Gorgeous Bradford pear Sheila, and the flower bed too.
Josephine.
Thanks, Josephine. So.....is the Mex Plum blooming now too?
Absolutely that picture was taken the day before yesterday, it is the most beautiful that it has ever been.
There is not a space on it without blooms, I guess it has reached maturity, lots of bees around it, and it perfumes the whole yard with that sweet scent of honey.
Nice tree, will definately need to find a place for one.
Cat Pee is what they smell like! The high school I went to had them planted in the courtyard, just outside the lunch room. During springtime, when they bloomed, no one would eat outside because the smell was so overpowering.
Stacey, which one are you talking about, the Bradford pear? or the Mexican plum?
My neighbor gave a good description "smells like a dirty diaper."
Bradford Pear.
How funny, I haven't smelled a Bradford pear but I will have to make a point of it and see if I agree with you girls.
You guys made me laugh! I don't know how pleasant my walk will be tonight when I am thinking of cat pee in a dirty diaper!!!
I went outside before posting the other morning and pulled a bloom down and smelled of it, two in fact. They have no odor to me at all. Maybe the area around it is frequented by male cats?? If so it will smell long after the blooms are gone!!
I have also done what you did, smell the flowers directly, when we had a bradford pear in the yard of our previous house and could not smell anything. I am not sure what it is Sheila (maybe the timing??), but I know for sure it was the trees. And, no male cats in my high school! :) It happened all four years I was in high school and I have heard of others noticing the same smell where there is a large concentration of the trees. Do a google search for "bradford pear blooms smell", and many others describe the scent much better than I do.
Maybe it is the "male" tree! LOL!!
funny, saw this in recent posts and had to check it out since I just smelled our BP for the very first time today. My DD said "what does it smell like momma?" Pee was my answer! Good thing they are beautiful or I'd be out there cutting them all down by now :-)
I had the same experience... individual flowers don't smell, but the tree does!
Male tree! LOL
That would account for the dirty sock smell!!!
roflol!! ;-)) yep!
