Look who bloomed! Sinn. Rio das Pedras. Its pretty amazing growing this little beauty from a seed.
Oh Keyring:)
I am impressed, that's for sure!! I am just trying to grow this family....
Nice Plant ....... and ....... Nice jar too! I gotta try a sinnigia!
hey, good growing! I think the others need to see a standard AV next to it for size....? :P
Oh that is one of those teeny weeny ones!!! Isn't that just about the sweetest thing I have ever seen.Oh I would love to see a standard sized av along side it.It would probably scare the poor little thing. It's just amazing how something sooo tiny can look soo amazing.I Love It : )
Nancy
My goodness! That is a BIG difference. It still amazes me how a teeny sinnigia can have a bloom that packs such a punch.Just Lovely : ) OK I do have a question. They are very small and so delicate looking...Was it hard to get it planted in that tiny jar?Did you need any special instruments for that task? Do you use any special soil? Ahhh I am just so intrigued by this.I can't get over how neat that looks : )
Nancy
Morning,
Theres no special instruments in my house..I just used a pencil to make the hole and dropped the little plant in,then pushed some soil around it and gently firmed it around the plant.Thats it.I think there pretty tuff little plants. They have to be to live at my house:)LOL. I water them with a turkey baster.I used the soil for the AV's.I don't know if thats right or wrong.Maybe Keyring can tell use that.
Pssst Nancy I have one to trade:)
yeah, they are tough little puppies. The tuber really helps.
mix: I find mine grow best in long fibre sphagnum moss (which I have lying around because I grow orchids), but AV mix is absolutely just fine. I currently have half in moss and half in AV mix.
humidity: They do prefer some humidity, so if your humidity is low, it's best to grow in a terrarium or a jar. It doesn't have to be whopping high, drenching type of humidity, so the jar doesn't need a top. (If you, like me, prefer not to water for months, then a lid is a very good idea :-) Besides, they are just adorable in tiny little glass jars....
shipping: Two things to note: (1) the stems break easily and (2) there's a tuber. They can be tricky to pack because they're so small and the stems break easily. But no matter! If it arrives broken, root the broken tip "cutting", and plop the tuber down into a little indentation on some AV soil. You're done.
A bit more detail on the last bit: The tip cutting first forms a tuber and then blooms, so it might take a bit of time. As for the tuber, they often have specks of green on the top, which are new stems ready to grow and bloom. Try not to damage those. (Even if there's no green, they've always resprouted for me.) The tuber likes to be at soil surface level, so don't bury it.
tools: If you know how to use chopsticks, they are really really useful in times like this :P You'll get more control if you use the pointed kind rather than the blunt square-tipped ones (great for noodles, not so great for plants!).
Very very easy plants!
Jan,did you say ttttt..trade? I will send you a dmail. I have seeds sown from Key but they aren't up quite yet.Thank you and also thanks for the tips.
Keyring,Thank you so much for the easy to understand information.I really appreciate it Wish websites were as easy to understand LOL I actually think now with your advice I am actually feeling confident enough to give this a try.I have the seeds you sent me sowed.keep checking like a mother hen for that first sprout.LOL Once they come up do they grow pretty fast? Will I be able to see them when they sprout without a magnifier? I have never had any before so I am not sure what to look for.
Nancy
The micro sinns can be blooming in 5 months or less. "Grow pretty fast" is kinda relative, as they stay pretty small, LOL. I honestly don't check my seed pots for 2 months or more, so I can't say if they're visible when they sprout...???
If you haven't guessed yet, I'm a fairly lazy grower, so when I sow seeds I set it up so I can leave them for months without worrying. Takes a little extra work up front, but makes it easier for me in the longer run. I can barely keep up with watering the bigger plants, ha.
Hi There;
Mini & micro mini sinningia usually will sprout within a week. They are my favorites & i grow quite a collection of them.I find them the easiest to grow of any gessie.Leaving them for a month is really to long as they will probably not have enough water. i check mine every 2 nd. day. & once they have sprouted pick them up with a tooth pic & put them back down anywhere in the soil & they wll grow much much faster.I grow quite a few from seed as i hybridize also.

Great info Keyring,Thanks.Chopsticks sound like a great tool.Your right about the seeds.I planted the seeds for the little sinn.in Dec and its blooming already.Amazing.
Hi mrsbonnie,This newbie to Sinn. would love to see pictures of your collection.please:) what other gessies do you grow? Jan
Oh my goodness, there are amazing! Thank you mrsbonnie for posting your beauties, please post pictures more often! Jan
Hi everyone! I'm new to Dave's Garden, but I am catching up on reading about some of my favorite topic areas. I have not had much luck with AVs but I love epicsia and streps, and I have been looking for Sinningias ever since I saw them at the US Botanical Garden Conservatory. My question is where do you find seed for them? I would love to start one in a glass jar like that.
Thanks and it's nice to meet y'all!
Hi and Welcome!
The seeds from these plants were given to me from Keyring. But if you look at the stickys at the top of the AV forum theres souces for them in there.Aren;t they the cutest little plants! I hope to grow more.
