I have a few kiddie pools with multiple plants which
grew from just two measly sprigs last spring. We normally
have a mild winter, but this one was pretty darned cold, and
icy.
While piddling around outside today, I pulled a few of those
nasty looking things out of the pond, and to my surprise, some
had a bit of green on them.
So. Are they dead and just tricking me, or are they hiding in
there waiting for spring?

Water hyacinths...they are only playing dead, right?
Well, I'm in 7a too and I can NOT overwinter them outside. Well...not normally. I pulled a few mushy ones out of the pond yesterday and they did have a bit of green in the middle but I figured they are mostly dead and tossed them. It will be interesting to see if yours revive :)
Charlotte,
There is a lady in town who sells them, and I was shocked
to hear her say that she never so much as covers up her pond plants.
I'll give them longer before they become compost.
Keep in touch and we'll see what we come up with.

Last year I sorted and saved the water hyacinths that still had a little green but only a few came back by the end of summer.

I kept the one outside that had a little green left. I did overwinter 3 inside. I do that each year :)
